Hello all :)!

New member here, just bought this 2003 model ZZW30 earlier this week, Monday. Really excited and an absolutely joyful experience driving this along. It came with 18 inch alloys from the previous owner and I think they are a nice fit.

Hi Alan "Ballzy" Ball  here, newbie.  Just bought a very unloved 89 MR2.   Looking to fix the old girl up into a more respectable state, initially for use as a weekender, then, as money allows a track toy.  Agenda:  Get it working; get it registered; get it tidied up (currently hand painted matt black and some really bad vinyl wrapping); improve the handling (springs way too soft); improve the brakes.  New rotors and pads to start with;  lastly, upgrade the engine with a blacktop and aftermarket ECU.
Timeframe 12-18 months.
All offers of help absolutely and very gladly accepted. I'm not proud, I'll also take charity handouts if you've upgraded your car and have bits that IO can use that are better than the current bits I've got :)
I'm based on the Gold Coast, and would like to meet up with like minded nutters, hmm, enthusiasts

Hi Alan. When you say "89 MR2" is it an AW11 or SW20? Toyota produced and sold both models in 1989, although the second shape body model run is normally referred to as 1990 onwards to avoid confusion. This helps anyone who might offer help, or take pity on you with charity parts.

I have an AW11 and an SW20, both were made in 1989, with the AW11 being one of the last 800 produced, while my SW20 has a chassis serial number of 2000 and was manufactured in October of that year. While a bit confusing for registration authorities, the situation provides an opportunity for the driver to closely compare both vehicles as they are somewhat different in power and handling.

Also, in case you aren't aware, this Forum and the various MR Owner's Clubs in each state, although closely connected, are not the same. The Club in Queensland normally publishes its monthly Runs on the Forum and membership of the Club as an Incorporated Association costs $20.00 per year. The Club prides itself on keeping so-called "politics" to a bare minimum and our aim is to simply enjoy the cars.

We would welcome you coming on any Run to see whether or not you would like to join the Club, so keep watching the Forum for announcements.

Hope to catch up in person soon.

Walter

@Tralfaz   it's an AW11, purchased sight unseen from a lad in Bowen.  It was originally red, then it had been resprayed purple (looks like that might even have been a good professional job too!) then someone has decided to paint it matt black (rattle can job) and put some carbon fibre wrap on it (bonnet, roof, engine cover and side vents).  They've used the cheapest crap from china that doesn't deform under a heat gun, so it looks really bad.
I'm in the process of removing it now.  I'd love to have it repainted back to the original red, but the cost is probably too high.  I have sourced some better quality (3M) vinyl from a mate who runs Gold Coast Car Wraps and I'll rewrap it in carbon fibre look again.

The interior is in fairly good condition (seats look as new) and the centre console (over the gear cables) was covered in the vinyl, once I removed it, I found that it too is in almost new condition, bonus.  The radio surround and door inlays have been replaced with some really bad wooden (real plastic wood :) ) ones.  They're in the bin now and I'm looking for some new (second hand) original ones.

The Inlet has been modified with a K&N cone style air intake, but it is really low down in the engine bay, I'm not happy with that, so I'm looking for a better solution.

I bought it unregistered, so I new I was in for some work.  I have just made up a new o/s rear hand brake cable and purchased a new (second hand) door lever ( the little loop that pushes the metal arm down has lost it's head an so won't hold the arm any more) so that I can open the drivers door from the outside :)

Next thing to attack will be the engine mounts (rear one looks like it may already be perished beyond use) and try and work out where the oil stains are from and if there are any actual leaks (sump plug definitely needs a new sealing washer)  hoping to have it ready for a road worthy in 4-6 weeks.

The front and rear bumpers need to come off to be unwrapped / rewrapped too.  Are there any gotacha's I should know about?   I have found any you tube vids on how to take them off yet, so ATM, I'll be looking for the clips and screws as I go...

Hi
Finally got my AW running after coming to Tweed Heads from Sydney.  The ECU had a meltdown 30 Km after I had the car shipped here. It's been in the shop getting a new ECU and harness since April and I need to go for a run somewhere.
I am a current member of NSW MR2 club but you guys are a lot closer now. I was hoping to come along next Sunday to the  Westward, Ever Westward run if I could get and an address and time.

I've owned it since 1991 and it just keeps getting faster.

Cya soon
Mark
Edit: Damn. Won't start. Recharging battery now. Maybe not next weekend. Bloody alternators on these things don't last long.
Re Edit Just put the battery back in and charging at 14V at idle. Maybe just dirty terminals.

Hi i'm matt,

have an sw20 GT (imported version) , 1990. has aftermarket intakes, 18" wheels and is very low and stiff.

I want to upgrade the brakes, and get 17" wheels. happy with the suspension but a bit more sidewall will help when the road is less than perfect.

needs some electrical bits too, the mirror switch mainly.

other than that i don't want to do any other mods for a while, just get used to it as it is quite lively.

I forgot to say hello,
I'm Mike, I joined at the MR2 Nationals All Japanese Day.
I have a '87 AW11 (Mk1b with Sunroof) converted to an SC with a AE92 stock 4AGZE (AFM version). (Done about 14 years ago).  My plans are not to go overboard with my car, I'll do the minor mods such as a new pulley for the SC but don't want to ruin my car, it's perfect as it is.

So here it is, you may recognise it from All Jap Day, it was the white one ( lol)

Yes, the interior is almost flawless and everything works :)

Hi Mike,

we are really glad to have you join the Club. The more AW11's in superb road going condition the better I say.

I am very jealous of the steering wheel as I believe that this was an optional extra, but did you know that there are also ski/surfboard racks for the ADub as well? They are super rare but look hideous ( maybe that's why they are rare?). I also like your wheels, that mini-Maglite appearance really suits the car.

Looking forward to catching up on the coming Sunday Run. There are going to be a few ADub's, which is great.

Walter

Hi everyone,
I'm Nelson, this is my 1987 AW11. Some of you may remember me from the Queensland Nationals earlier this year.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone again!
Nelson.

Hi Nelson,

great to hear from you. Our next activity is our very popular "Technical Director's Day" to be held on Sunday the 16th of August at the famous Scope Cave at Lowood. This gives members (and intending members - pay on the day) the chance to put their car up on the hoist for free and have two of the best MR2 mechanical wizards in Australia (Scope and Nate_P) have a good look at the car and let you know if there is anything major that needs to be done, plus fix small issues on the spot. Keep an eye on the Queensland forum section for details.

We are also holding our 2015 AGOM on the day and the Club will be providing lunch so hope you can make it.

Regards,

Walter

NB: Great car, another AW11 still original and road registered. Hooray!!

Hi Walter
Thank you for letting me know about the Technical Director's Day! I will be attending for sure! I will check out the forum for more details. I forgot to talk a little bit about the car! The car itself is mostly original, all I've really done to the car since I've owned it is replace the worn bushes and replace the tyres with a full set of Federal 595 rsr's. My plans for the car is to eventually swap out the original 4age Bigport for the later 4age Blacktop 20v. The original engine is up to 261,000km and is using quite a bit of oil.

Regards,
Nelson

P.S Thanks Walter and 5SGTE!
