3rd gear in my smt box has been gone since I bought my spyder (makes a crunching sound when shifted in and out of third gear) and I have just been shifting 2nd to 4th to avoid further damage
I was told when I bought the car it had just got a new clutch and just had to have it reset.
A short time later the hydraulic pump failed and I had it replaced at a high end mechanics and he scanned and reset the box but nothing changed still the same problem .
I have now picked up a untested 2nd hand smt box from a wrecker for $150 to throw in and see if it works or to use as parts to rebuild my old box as my mechanic believes the 3rd gear synchro is gone and needs replacing.
My questions are please
Is 3rd gear synco busting a common part to go ? Can he get parts from u ?and then call u for technical advice
And what's yr phone number and location? As I'm in newcastle nsw . Thank u

3rd is the gear that fails commonly in hard-driven cars. commonly physically busted and this sometimes totally stuffs the box with metal particles.
all the syncros have much the same life/issues, especially if the clutch is not changed as soon as it is almost worn out.
there were internal changes and upgrades, so you need the VIN of the car the other gearbox came out of to be 100% sure of parts.  ,most reputable wreckers list this on their invoice, so check.
dont assume you can make 1 box out of 2, but it might be possible.
I keep parts like syncros in stock, but this changes daily.
sometimes, you also need the gear and syncro hub & sleeve.
i will assist your mechanics if they are buying parts from me, or you can just send me the car/box to sort out. cars come from interstate weekly

thank you very much for your quick reply and sharing your expertise, it is greatly appreciated.
i certainly would have sent the car to you had i known you existed before reading yesterdays post but i am a new member of MR2 Australia just found your latest post buy luck.
i have had my car booked in with this mechanic for a month to get the box done and it went in today
Good news on my $150 box is, it seems to shift properly and has been pulled apart b4 so hopefully it means its issues have been addressed and that i have some great luck and it goes in my car and works first go.
if not I or he will be talking to you to buy parts for the rebuild and then seek your technical advice
i will check the wrecker for the vin but i do know that the car it came out of was also a 2000 model
thank you again and i may speak to you soon if the luck of the gods is not with me lol

Spyder conversions are now a regular task for us, so much so we are periodically running short of conversion kits/parts. If you want to do your own, we can generally assemble a full kit but might need a few weeks notice.

Our current (march 2015) tow-in/drive out price is $4000 , but this will probably have to go up soon as the A$ has fallen a bit  and international freight has gone up a lot

keep a watch on ourt facebook page for regualr pics/posts about conversion
