Dudeman
Nice effort man.

Thanks Dudeman :)
B24
Great thread mate and well detailed conversion.  What is the next project??

Thanks B24, your car was an inspiration to see my project through. It still needs more work to get it to the level i'm hoping. I have to admit my next project would be trying to get a bit more power out of this one, I have a feeling my car buying days are numbered haha. I ended up loosing a fair bit of money on the MR2 that I had a few years ago, although you always loose money in cars, this was a tad bit too much. The stock engine rebuild ended up setting me back 9k to get someone to do (plus another 3k to buy the 3sgte engine, gearbox and clutch only a few weeks prior).  I've had just on 19 cars in the last 11 years and none of them i've been able to get to the level i've always wanted.

I found in the past I always stop modifying a car when it feels like it gets to the too hard basket (things like aftermarket ecu, aftermarket seats, engine work etc) and I get something new to do the same usual modifications again like suspension, exhaust and wheels (I seem to like doing that haha)

In the back of my mind i've always thought an aftermarket ecu wouldn't be as reliable as an oem ecu, and have this feeling it would end up causing the engine to lean out and blow haha.

After visiting a great mate of mine, my boot was full of goodies :)
Pictured, FMIC Kit, RSR Springs and Shocks. I've decided to go for a more permanent lowered option, the coilovers are great (and very adjustable) but I have always wanted to go back to a traditional Shock/Spring setup. The Front Mount kit was on my mates car so I know it all fits ok. Its a Driven Performance Kit from NZ. I believe there was quite a bit of modification required to get it to fit. There is no structural modifications required to fit the FMIC, but I will need to trim the inside of the bumper slightly to clear the core.

Here is the FMIC Kit, Dump pipe on the top right and the Rear Strut brace i've had for a little while now. (not sure if i'll end up fitting it), still ermming and ahhing.

The core is the perfect size so the bumper support will remain unmodified, especially for insurance purposes its a good thing. The pipe to the bottom right of the picture below will be replaced, due to the pipe being a bit too short, and a joiner in between has been used to make up the distance. Its a simple 90 degree bend so its easy to find a replacement.

The new dump pipe uses a 3 bolt flange, the part after the stock dump pipe is a 2 bolt flange so I will need to get the rest of the exhaust modified to fit (the right hand side of the image below connects to the dump pipe), I will get the exhaust shop to remake up this whole section. I have been told that this particular part of the exhaust is extremely hard to replicate in 3" due to the close tolerances to the subframe and motor/gearbox. I hear that this part of the exhaust is the most restrictive.

As you can see in comparision to the new dump pipe (3") to the mid pipe currently under the motor, there is a huge difference. In particular some sections of the exhaust squash down considerably.

Here are the RSR springs and stock shocks. I wouldn't mind trying to find a set of Adjustable KYB shocks to replace the stock ones, but I think I might get them on and get the new shocks later down the track.

Should be an interesting few months ahead. I have also bought a full interior from the same model as my car, so I will be able to fix up the sunroof, replace the torn front seats and practice trimming my current set of door trims (since i'll have a spare).

Wow its going to be so much easier to change the plugs now. Seems I might have to paint that cam cover, its lacking a bit of colour now haha. I am hoping to get new Silicone Radiator hoses and a Fenix Alloy Radiator eventually.

Part of the intercooler piping on the passenger side goes near wheel well, and I needed to remove the resonator box that was there to quieten down the intake noise of the stock box. There was quite a bit to it. Should have saved 300 grams or so (MAXIMUM weight reduction SUCCESS!!)

Here is the other half of the resonator box

The intercooler pipes will go under the fuse box, there is a decent size hole under there for me to pass the intercooler pipes through.

I may need a sharper bend silicone hose coming out of the intercooler. The bolts on the exhaust manifold will also need to be replaced eventually, they look aweful at the moment.

I found Silicone Spray to be really awesome for cleaning the Silicone hoses, it literally disolves any dirt and gives them a really natural shine.

I will likely loose functionality of my fog lights but i'll find a way around this eventually. The main thing is getting it to fit without having to take off the stock air filter setup for legal reasons.
I found out my RS*R Spring Rates
Front: 3.72kg/mm
Rear: 3.37kg/mm

I have a feeling my Largus Coilovers were 4kg/6kg. Reasons behind returning back to a traditional spring/shock setup was due to the fact that my cars only a daily driver and the fine adjustments of ride height and camber adjustment.
I still need to fix up my radiator system, i'm not using the factory st215 radiator and as a result the top coolant hose is resting against the turbo. Something I want to get onto very soon.
I am in the market for a set of Samco Radiator hoses at some stage too, thought i'd do it all at once.
I've still got so much to do on the car:
- Buy/Install Replacement Fenix Alloy Radiator
- Buy/Install Samco Top And Bottom Radiator hoses with T Clamps
- Install Manual Prop Shaft and Replace Gearbox Fluid
- Install RS*R Springs
- Install Driven Performance Dump Pipe
- Get Mid Pipe Under car redone in 3" (currently about 2" but squashes down very small at some sections)
- Fit High Flow Cat (since factory dump pipe has cat integrated)
- Replace Sunroof Cables (perfect time for summer :))
- Replace Both Front Seats with spare set (due to excessive wear and cigarette burns)
- Replace Center Console Lid
- Replace broken Polariser sheet in center heads up display (tells your economy, compass direction etc)
- Respray Cam Cover
- Retouch up wheels with small marks/grazes on them
- Refit LED versions of interior globes throughout the car
- Get GPS system on Aftermarket eBay Headunit working 100%

Loving the attention and detailed work you've got lined up for the car!  That dump should free up a few more ponies, maybe spool a lil bit quicker too.  Keep it up mate!

Thanks :) I've had these "next stage" mods planned for a few cars in the past but none have really eventuated like I have been able to with this car. Each day I own it I like it even more, I'd say I made a fantastic choice in buying it as i'm normally a bit more hasty with my decisions (maybe i'm maturing haha).

I got home from my mate tonight with a few more goodies. Mainly to fix up some of the worn interior, spares are always good too. You will notice a sunroof panel on the table to the left of the picture, I will be able to just swap the units straight over which will definitely save some time. I have a feeling removing the headliner is going to be a big job indeed, one I am not too happy about having to do haha. It is coming upto summer and it would definitely make the car really feel like a Touring Sports Wagon. My previous Caldina didn't have one and I must admit I did wish it did so I got lucky with this car. I've got a very good pair of front seats to put in as my drivers side does have quite a bit of wear.

This weekend i've got my mate coming around whos going to give me a hand with swapping the struts around with the RSR Springs. Should be nice to drop the car about 1 inch, at the moment it is sitting at stock height. If I have some time on Sunday I might attempt the sunroof installation, would be great knowing its done.

Hahaha good point, I drive past your place nearly every day. I'll have to pop around one evening when your free. I'd really love to check out the beams beast :)

It was a massive weekend for my little 1998 Toyota Caldina ST215. I finally got around to fitting the RSR springs in place of my Largus Coilovers which are going to a mate of mine. The car dropped about 1 inch all round and the spring rates are a bit lighter now (3.72kg/mm, it used to be 6kg/4kg with the coilovers). I am planning to find some new Bilstein or KYB Shocks to replace the factory Toyota Shocks I got with the RSR Springs.
The car looks great a bit lower now.

I had to remove most of the interior plastics in the boot (there were heaps in there) to get to the strut tops on the rear. I got around to installing the Cusco Rear Strut brace and while i'm definite it does little/nothing to the handling/rigidity of the car I thought I might as well put it on :)

I also got around to replacing my sunroof, what an absolutely huge job that was. It took a good 4 hours or so to remove all the trims in the interior. I had to remove all the Door seals, A B and C pillar trims, all the Hand grips on the roof, roof lights, sunroof switches, front and rear seat belts and sunvisers. Dropping the sunroof itself was hard enough (weighs a tonne haha), let alone getting the replacement sunroof in. I am really happy that its all working now. A good 6-7 hours for that alone but it was well worth it.

I still need to get around to replacing the tailshaft and front bushes (which are unfortunately more noisy now that the position of the control arms are sitting higher than they were before, most likely putting more pressure on the bushes). After thats done i'm putting some money away for the dump pipe installation, new mid pipe and new cat. Once thats all done i'll get around to replacing the Top Mount Intercooler and maybe start tinkering under the cam covers a bit :)

Hahahaha thats hilarious, I bet the beams would be heaps of fun. I remember talking to you a few years back when you were thinking about the conversion. Amazing how time flies.

Thanks :) I still have so much to do on the car too haha

Its been a super exciting September month with more progress on the Caldina, the shocks that I got with my RS*R springs were completely dead and as a result the shock was bottoming out and smashing the bump stops (what was left of them). I decided to put the Largus Coilovers back in after a good clean. The control arm bushes still need replacing but
My biggest goal next will be to replace the dump pipe and mid pipe, I have a good friend looking to help me. Its likely that the whole exhaust system will end up getting replaced with a new system and i'll put my Blitz exhaust up for sale.
The cars been driving so much better recently, its like the moons have aligned haha. I can tell the intercooler is getting quite a bit of heat soak from the exhaust/engine heat. I will try use the kit intercooler pipes where I can, but there is a good chance that a few of them will need to be cut to get a proper fit. I am aiming to leave the fog lights in as much as I can, but I have been told in the past that these will be in the way.
The sunroof still needs to be aligned, one side is sitting a bit too low. Its pretty easy to adjust the glass with the sunroof installed in the car so I might get onto that this weekend.
I've always had this thing for finding really rare OEM or TRD parts, a few in particular have come up recently which have left me drooling but at the same time a few have been a bit too expensive.

I found a Wando Front Strut Brace which needs some repairing work, I would likely just get it recoated in the same colour. Then again a Cusco Front Strut Brace would be just as cheap in the end.

There is word that there is an HKS FCon piggyback ecu available for the ST215, but i've heard they are particularly difficult to get the software to tune them so this will likely be replaced by an eManage Ultimate.

I did find a TRD GTT Grille after looking for ages, its currently still in transit at the moment but they make a huge difference to the overall look of the car. It should be here next week but will need to be painted (since the one i'm getting is white):

Take one standard Caldina GTT....

Add One TRD Caldina GTT Grille....

and then install......

I ended up scoring the grille on ebay for about $90 in the end, its an awesome purchase and changes the look of the front completely. If the colour looks a bit funny (or stripey) its because I haven't had the chance to take it to get painted and it is currently "vinyled".... I put it in quote marks because I actually used Electrical Tape hahaha. The finish isn't too bad I guess. I'm still hoping to fit that front mount intercooler at some stage, you can see the rear of the front bumper, that piece going across is just plastic and needs to be trimmed away to allow for FMIC goodness. Still ermming and ahhing about doing it though. The dump pipe seems like a better choice at the moment.

DudemanThats some nice work and detail you have posted up here.  When will this car be for sale??

I can't believe I missed a reply to my thread. Sorry mate. Thanks very much for the comments. Its a labour of love haha. Ah the old "when will this car be for sale" question hahaha. My track record isn't the best I must admit. I've had 20 cars now in 10 years. Thats one every 6 months haha. I know this has been sad before but this will be here to stay lol. Did I mention I bought a ST162 Celica SX for a weekend project too lol.

Anyhoo....

hahahahaa. So true. If its any consolation I actually decided to keep the car haha. Its had some work done to it recently to bring it back up to a neat level:

I have been trying to catch up on the things that have been needing work the last 6 months. Glad to see it all safe and sound now.

So far i've done the following:
- Vibration on tailshaft (really makes the ride in stop and start traffic a bit frustrating) - FIXED
Changed to the manual tailshaft which is about 1" longer. Extension Casing was actually leaking gearbox fluid so good thing I got onto it quick. Also changed Extension Casing seal

- Wheel alignment (front outer of tyres are completely bald now) - FIXED
Wheel alignment at the front was out by 26mm lol. No wonders it went through a set of tyres in 2 months.

- New Tyres at front - FIXED
Had bad camber wear
