Bit more progress on the car from last night and this morning.
Plate removed from car, centre hole cut out and bolts (studs installed)
Next step I created a frame to suit the core dimensions of the intercooler. This way I can add heavy foam tape along the frame to seal the intercooler to the plate.
The frame has also added strength to help support the IC.
Foam tape has been applied to the IC frame.
Test fit of IC onto the plate with foam. Seals well and doesn't over compress the foam.
By using a frame and foam as a spacer it enables the entire IC core to have air going across it even from the stock circular hole behind the side vent. Had I mounted the IC hard up against the round body hole only that section of core would have air running through it.
I'll install a shroud and fan on the other side which should enable it to operate as well as it does on an SW20.
Plate installed on the body for the final time. Just need to bolt in the IC now and start to work out how I'll do the piping.
This view of the side vent reminds me of an SW20 :)
One set of pipe completed! Was able to use what came in the IC kit to make this one.
The other one is almost finished. I just need a long piece of straight silicone hose. Basically the length of two couplers. I'll get this piece from Supercrap auto tomorrow.
Shot of the engine bay as it stands.
Still have final IC pipe to make.
Installed gen3 Turbo hotpipe with factory BOV and piping.
Installed gen3 Turbo factory intake piping
Installed an Apexi gen3 turbo intake I bought ages ago and didn't think would fit. The fit is perfect, I just need to make a couple of support rods to hold it in position. Sort of hanging in photo.
Connected up the A/C idle up valve and piping in anticipation of the A/C compressor and custom piping being installed early next year. Will be fun trying to get the factory climate control working again :)
I also have the last IC pipe just sitting in position. I will be cutting the bend of the end of it and doing a straight shot with silicone hose. This will also enable it give a little when the engine moves.
Overall bloody stocked with what I have been able to achieve over a couple days just using the tools I have at home. Starting to look like an SW20 engine bay (which is my goal)
Once the final IC pipe is made, Apexi filter supported I can then start to give the engine bay a good detail. Just a bit dusty overall. Though the camera flash makes things look worse than what they are.
Next time the car is at the mech I think I might get him to powder coat the valve cover in a nice grey colour and media blast some pipes and brackets to tidy them up.
Next update at completion :) Yay!
