Staggered can mean wider at the rear and thinner at the front AND/OR larger diameter at the rear and smaller at the front;  Looking at your set up, it's not size of rims that need changing, but the ride height - your car looks like it's quite high up, judging by the gap between your tyre and the arch, when viewed from the side  - if a snugger fit is the visual aesthetic you desire, perhaps consider some lowering springs as a first option - would make your car lower and change the look of it, perhaps more than you'd think?>?

just my two cents - beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

    Cheers

18s are too heavy - go for something smaller/lighter preferably Jap.
MR2s without staggered rims look kinda goofy.

Well the wheels are here in sydney and in excellent condition. Only costs about $60 (total not each) to get them to you if you're in metro Brisbane too.

So can anyone explain why staggered is best for mr2s?

Because the factory configuration uses staggered. i.e. 1" wider on the rear.
I can't explain all the dynamics behind it all but usually a mid or rear engined car requires staggered.

...and so heavier at the back = more load and the need for higher load rated tyres for a given profile.
