Turbo charged 1MZ-FE Build Thread

Hi All,

I am currently building a turbo charged 1MZ-FE for install into a custom widebody SW20, build thread here:  http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=20720, so have started an engine build thread to document the experience.  The target power output is ~400rwhp for a reliable daily driver, and weekend track car.

The donor engine was a crate motor delivered from Toyota, though has had a previous life in a 550rwhp twin sequential turbo system set up, designed, built and tested by Tristan of WTFautos here in Perth.  The engine itself has 10,000km on it, and the component list looks something like this:

Base engine – Majority new crate motor minus ancillaries (A/C, Alternator)
Air conditioner compressor, Alternator, associated brackets
Toyota gasket kit
ARP head stud set custom order
ARP main stud set custom order
Spool forged connecting rods
CP forged pistons
All bottom end bearings
Headwork including removal of excess quench areas, valve seat blending, port radius etc
Post headword machining, valve seat cutting, clearance setting and assembly
Fuel rail modification for return style regulator & injector seat modification incl custom mounts
680cc SARD injectors
‘Performance springs’ valve springs
Haltech E11V2 ECU including full harness
Custom built stainless steel exhaust manifolds & crossover pipe
Ceramic coating on exhaust components
GT3071 turbocharger
Modified cooling system modifications numerous
HKS Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel lines
Heater pipe modifications
Engine block machining
Engine internal balancing
Piston crown modification by CNC
Connecting rod modification suit V6 application
Block modification suit transmission etc
Assembly including clearance testing, torque cycling
Sump modification suit turbocharger
Oil & coolant lines for turbocharger including adapters
Hall effect engine position sensor & trigger wheel
Custom side engine mount to suit V6 into SW20
Clutch & flywheel including flywheel modification to suit V6
Exhaust system from turbo to tip
Intercooler system & pipework & thermo fan
Turbo suction pipe & air filter
Turbo wastegate actuator & unmodified exhaust housing
Driveshaft modification to suit V6 driveshaft carrier

Dakota Digital SGI-8 Tachometer Interface Unit

Proposed completion date for the build/installation is October 2011, pending successful engine conversion application (WA Regulations) and engineer's certificate.

Cheers
Daz

    This will be a beast.  So its basically Tristans motor but single turbo?  Why not keep the twin turbo and just get a 7 pack of brown undies?

    Tristan's oprevious set up would not suit my needs as a daily driver, and there were definite practicality issues with losing the MR2's (albeit small) boot space.  My application is for a solid, reliable power train with minimal tinkering;  No judgement on the old engine's set up, but 550rwhp and a sequential turbo system, which I had a ride (er, sorry - a blast!) in - was not what I have in mind...

    As a note, a mutual friend of Tristan's/mine (Dozer) is currently building a single turbo 500hp+ V6 installation in his 1990 hardtop, so it will be interesting to see the differences in power/torque curves, fuel consumption, and raw perfromance for these engines:

    twin sequential V6    550rwhp
    single turbo V6        ~500hp
    single turbo             380-400rwhp

    We shall see

    Cheers

    So the engine as it was removed from the BURNINATOR project car looked like this:

    The rebuild process pics look like these - see the few thousand dollars worth of custom fasteners holding her together  :)

    Hopefully a few different ang;es there, it looks a lot better i the flesh, and the machining work is impressive...

    Cheers

    Here are my CP  forged pistons - really lightweight and quite beautiful objects in their own right!

    And here are the Spool forged rods.

    There are a couple of things to note:
    1.  The piston on the left is the stock rod, the one on the right is the forged item;
    2.  Notice the gold coloured circular insert in the upper part of the rod - this is a custom titanium insert machined and fitted to suit the application;
    3.  There is also some exquisite machine work to re-size the larger diameter hole to suit the application;

    Truly a modified item...

    Here's a view with the rocker covers removed -

    Check how clean the inside looks - testament to the quality of the prep work;

    The rocker covers went off to the powder coaters to become red to suit the car shell -

    Nice :)

    Looking very sweet!!  400rwhp should be more than "exciting" enough.

    What intercooler setup will you be running?

    Here's a few engine shots following the powder coating - just waiting on the (*&&%$#) body shop to release the shell now - scheduled for Friday lunchtime flat bed truck to WTauto.. It's fair to say am pretty excited at this stage, though am bracing myself for disappointment, after a pretty dismal run of let downs and false dawns...  A N Y W A Y S...

    Intercooler set up is yet to be firmly decided upon, though one thing that is definite is I'm keeping the boot space unfettled;  Tristan has some ideas, so we'l see how it pans out - I'll be photographing/documenting as I go, so watch this space..

    Here's the Garrett T35 (3071) turbo charger unit

    And the modified OS Giken ST twin plate clutch to get the power into the standard MR2 E153 gear box.  At present am not modifying the ratios to accommodate a longer fifth gear, though this may happen later once I have learned how the car drives, and if there is benefit to be had

    Very nice!!

    Re longer 5th gear, as a daily driver, thats one thing that I really found annoying in the turbo, 3000+rpm on the highway, a drop to low/mid 2000rpm would have been awesome from a noise POV, would have made it much more relaxing on longer trips.  The extra fuel economy would have been a bonus, although it was quite good anyway, low/mid 8litres/100km from memory.

    I doubt the performance would decrease significantly, and you can always dop back to 4th if required.

    As you have everything accessible, now might be a perfect time to do the mod?

    Cheers

    It's not in my budget right now, and I want to learn WHY I might need it as opposed to just doing it 'cos I can - might not even need it;

    Sounds epic - move over NSX!!

    What/who is the reference to NSX??

    If you don't find the revs too high in 5th atm then you obviously don't need it.
