hmmm i'm not sure how this has been put in.  looks like it's a ebay dock that's been opened and cut to fit, maybe glued to a backplate that inserts into the stock ashtray.  only downside with this of course is that it requires a good ashtray :p

I don't know if you could mount your project the same way, but my ashtray top was cracked like many others, so I replaced the flipup part with switches mounted on a metal plate. The plate is attached by screws to small brackets screwed to the ashtray pullout.
The wires run throught the side, and the whole thing can be pulled out just like the ashtray.


 

The plate is covered in black vynl, but I wouldn't think the match is critical as long as it is black.
 
I thought this option was better than having to buy a new ashtray that I would never use anyway.
