iPhone Ashtray Dock.

Hi everyone,
Been thinking a bit about the car interior, and realising that my ashtray has broken (for the second time!) I've been thinking about custom interiors....

I'm pretty sure I'll be moving to a double din headunit, and was thinking of places to mount an iphone.  Has anyone created a dock inside the ashtray?  I reckon this would be possible... not sure I have the skillz to do it though... but I reckon it'd be a good place to mount the phone.

since I'm looking at using bluetooth audio, I'd be hoooking the dock up to just power -

looking at custom stuff tho - there are some really cool setups!
http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=749864 (the quality of the work here is insane)
http://www.iphonesavior.com/2011/11/hack-your-dashboard-for-a-custom-iphone-dock.html (simple yet effective)
clearly whatever I do will have to include fibreglass / plastic ressin or something, and mounted a bit deeper than the second one (so that it didn't fly around when cornering hard)

What do people think? anyone done anything similar?  I've seen plenty of ashtrays with gauges / safc mounts etc but no phones....

    Gday Bigh
I have been looking at where and how to best install my mobile.
Where do other owners sit their phones?
The following are some other options:
    http://www.shopwiki.co.uk/l/Toyota-MR2-%2891%29-Dashmount-Bracket
    http://www.incarhandsfree.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_111_136&products_id=2312
I reckon it would be smart to utilise the ashtray in some way.
    Cheers

well at the moment, i jam my phone between the handbrake and the centre console, this is not ideal and i don't like having the cable visible.

I've thought about brackets like the ones you've show too, but i think something integrated into the ashtray would be idea (especially as ashtrays die).

My other issue is that i have to run a storche power adaptor on my iPhone cable, as my head unit was designed for the older iPhones, that allowed you to charge over 12v (apple changed this in the 3g), and because the adaptor doesn't click in it often comes out, causing the need to have to reset the head unit.

A $4 extension cord would fix this, however it doesn't solve the mounting problem of where to put the phone. :P

Have been considering the vent mounted cradle but that is the best airvent for pushing air onto you when you are driving. It is a good position for viewing the phone.

Still like your ashtray idea provided it doesn't block access to other controls.

Saw one on the net not long ago in ashtray and I'm pretty sure was made of Lego. Cosmtically looked like crap but looked like crap but it worked.

Will try and dig picture up

    awesome :)

    I found another good one:
    http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=765079

I've been questioning the orientation that I should have for it tho.  It would be pretty hard to not block the AC controls if it was in portrait mode, you'd want to have it raised up a bit so that it was usable at a pinch..... landscape however should be simple as.

It was this thread and I was mistaken :(

Don't see why you can't do a similar thing in astray. Would definitely paint it black though or just use black Lego

ok bit more research and I the ipad version of what I'm thinking of:

essentially I'm looking to fit the iphone on top of the stock ashtray base (the red lines I've drawn on would be the base).

this in theory should be some of the easiest fibreglassing to do - I may even be able to make it simply with bondo, and some wood, then finished nicely.

    source:
58seconds in the piece is layed down, now if you can imagine that being an iphone, and the base of the holder being the ashtray base..

    LEGO DOCK 2.0

Same thing with OP after being pissed off with my ash tray falling apart a few months back... i decided to make LEGO DOCK 2.0! But now that its in landscape mode with a jailbroken iphone i can rotate the home screen and i use Music + for swipe to change music controls and it looks cooler!

Been thinking of getting bluetooth dock so i don't even need the aux cable but a few hundred bux to fix a first world problem of being lazy of connecting the cable is not warranted.

Currently Using iphone 4 but was using to take the photo.

hehehe awesome :)  i'm surprised it hasn't been done more actually - seems like the perfect place for a phone dock.

i'm def going to attempt this one i think :) will see about different mounting options, need to make the wooden ring that goes around the phone first and look at how i'm going to mount the iPhone extension cable.

edit: i also found this to be impressive!

I had a custom one made up to support a gauge can't see why you couldn't mod one up similar to support the iphone esp with the number of cradles out there. But it might get in the way of the heater controls

I've also seen cigerette lights ones somewhere.
Personally a Bluetooth head unit should be sufficient?

it was part of a bigger project so i couldn't even tell you to begin with.

I had the A pillar made up to support another 3 gauges and a few other pieces like the coin sliver to support the blitz boost gauge and some other items

You would need to ask my mate from Phatt Audio Concepts for a definitive quote.
