I remember this car as an inspiration to keep me going during my 2000GT super widebody replica build;  now I am simply in awe - as an engineer I can fully appreciate the dedication and requirement to know everything about the car - as it is the chariot in which you place your body with the goal of death-inducing speed - I understand this as I made my first tentative steps on a track (Barbagallo, WA) Monday night, so the time has come to go full race on "little red" as she is affectionately known;

I have to say the transition to race car is quite a change;  I was thinking "take the double din sat nav/amp/audio visual stuff out, upgrade tyres/wheels and suspension and we're good to go"...  Perhaps I'm, embarking upon a whole new ball game?!!  BUT as with the body and v6 turbo engine project, once you start...

So apologies for the minor hijack - will likely be asking you guys a few Q'S from time to time;  Serious stuff this racing eh ;)

Fantastic work - :)

Cheers
Daz

Mate, you car is the hottest track spec car in the country and that's before it even has an engine! Damn that's great work.
It's certainly give me some great idea's for mine which is currently in pieces, half way through a V6 conversion.

The keypad and console looks amazing but the location of the switches would be a problem if you are racing the car in endurance races. Having the keypad behind the shifter will be problematic as you really have little time to take your eyes off the wheel at most of our Australian tracks. Having to look down, spot the switch, take action while managing a 400+hp car(which I suspect you will have), watching your mirrors, passing cars, setting up for the next corner is a difficult task. It would be best to get the pad up to the level of you steering position but out of the way of your hands flapping around (this does happen..). Also, fitting the Traction control, brake bias would be perfect on the A pillar/front stay of the roll cage would be far better in a pressure environment.
Are you going to fit a radio in the car? I highly recommend it. I really makes a difference plus its pretty much required for the 300km races.
Can you please hurry up as we need to drink beer while staring at this wonder at MTC 2015.

Thanks Daz
Yeah building a race car can snowball alot more then a daily car thats for sure. If going track only i would recommend starting with safety, so full weld in CAMS / FIA spec roll cage, wrap around seat, harness ect.

Steve,
I would not typically be using any of the buttons on the keypad while racing, more before so just setting up the car before i start, things like helmet fan, cockpit fan ect, all the buttons to control things while im racing are on the steering wheel, well only thing thats on the keypad that i might need to use is say wipers, but if i think it may spit or rain a little, i can program one of the buttons on the steering wheel i wont need in a race, such as launch control, to be for the wipers, just wipes while i hold the button, or toggles it on and off ect, every button, besides the radio button, just goes into digital inputs, not wired for anything in particular, so i can temporary set them to do anything.

And yes i do have a radio, and i agree with you. Even at non endurance event like a club track day ill prob have it in, thats if theres someone there thats happy to talk to me ha ha, so they can tell me that im leaking oil bad and to come in or i can tell them that im on fire or why ive stoped on the track! So the benefit is better then the weight, it would save the car or my life.
I have several Kenwood portables (hand held) which i use for work, so yeah i have set the car up to use one.
I have my own frequency issued by the ACMA plus also the normal public UHF 80 channels, so can have private comms to the car for endurence events pit crew could be on another frequency.
They have external connections for the PTT button which is on my steering wheel as seen in the pics, and connection for helmet, plus have antenna on the roof - all ways fun drilling holes in the roof.
Being the portable it runs on battery, so if i shut the car down, radio will still work.

If you enter the wakefield 300 or similar again and need pit crew again, im happy to help and can provide some comms.

Ah you always have such positive stuff to say about me James. Have you started to look for any accommodation if your going to the GP next year?

Kevin, yeah my plans are very much still bringing the car to the 30th anniversary next week, only thing that will stop me is heavy rain as the car is not exactly waterproof having no doors or things like that.

Havent been doing to much on the car recently, just sorting out some stuff i have, i had drawn up a mount for the Motec SLM to come off my dash, had it laser cut and then anodized, turned out really nice

I can now move my car around and work on it.

Also anyone that knows me knows i absolutely hate social media crap, no way i would ever get that facepage thing but after following a few people on instagram and there work, got talked into that, so anyone that has that i have been putting some pics up, @widemr2 mainly just the same as here and prob some work stuff too, so quite boring but atleast im not talking pictures of food or me in a mirror, actualy now i remember why i hate it, so no doubt ill get angry at it and delete it all.

Saw your car on Sunday, Just cannot imagine you are doing this level of tuning and modification under your garage. The level of knowledge and attention to details are just too awesome! When you finish your project. I am sure You will make Australia mr2 tuner proud.

Hey mate,

Twas really good to chat to you on sunday and pick your brains a bit,
I have never seen the sort of attention to detail that is displayed in your car in any of Australian motorsport I've see/ worked on.  This includes V8's, Porsche GT3's, Radicals, west, or F3.

Would love to get the wiring guys from the FSAE team to have a look at this at see how motorsport wiring should be done.

Which part of town are you based in, I would be more than willing to help out.
Ph: 0432876396

Have a good one,
Mat
