Well well guys, you're right - I've been patiently waiting for the right moment to resume works on my car, and now is the time.  I have a phone call to make tomorrow to ensure the garage space I arranged a month ago is still available, but as far as I know, we're ready to go the V6 turbo conversion beginning next week.

Amongst other things I've been working my arse off, involved myself in buying a house, more work, lots of driving (funnily enough) and a few other matters;  IN any event, hopefully now I can get the project finished off as I drew it up some time ago!

So, hopefully now the following can at last occur:
1.  dash mount gauge pod and genuine TRD gauges, new climate control unit (thanks just_ace), couple of replacement interior trim parts and the genuine TRD steering wheel (thanks Dylmrt) will complete the interior (finally!)

2.  full TRD suspension parts can be set up, (bushes, sway bars, end links etc) to stiffen the chassis and reduce body roll - she already corners great!

3.  later model brake booster installed and a full overhaul of the big brake system to improve braking performance

4.  a few tweaks to the castor and some trimming around the rear wheels to improve handling and clearance issues (no problems, just improvements)

5.  some minor running repairs to the front arch liners, and one rear wheel hub bolt repair

And most importantly 6.  install V6 turbo with performance prep to acheive somewhere between 370 - 400rwhp at the hands of WTF Auto.

Can't wait...  :)

Cheers
Daz

  I would love to know what the final payout figure was for the body and paint work.  Would have cost a pretty penny.

Finished figures for the body and paint are as follows:

Bodywork - $9,500 includes full custom mods to suit the ultra wide demonstrator car as much as possible WITHOUT altering the vehicle chassis or structure.  The rear quarters, side skirts and front fenders are now permanently part of the car - i.e. do not come off!  The only removable sections of body kit are the front and rear bumpers.  A few bits got missed due to strained relations towards the end of the job – a Midship Runabout logo and black grill mesh to the front bar opening at the front radiator, and a few cosmetic touches to complete...

Paint - $7,500 though if I was to do it again (or in fact when I get a respray as required) I'll be going to a more reputable and conscientious outfit, rather than "half job Harry".  I understand this may come at a premium but cost is not the issue if properly planned - it still irks me somewhat the shortcuts and outright lies I encountered from the painter.  But no need for tears now - the milk was spilled some time ago and the carpets have been replaced ;)  Experience was gained and expectations managed.

Kit - cost $1300, clearly replica makeshift efforts made from swimming pool fibreglass - attempted to be sold to me as "originals" (hahah...) the seller wanted $13,000 for "Genuine Japanese sourced kit" but "couldn't find the receipt"... Shame..

Still - a valuable lesson was learned here throughout all of this - the kit is not where the real expense should be - it's the skill of the installer, especially given the amount of custom I was looking. There's actually that much custom work here, the original panels are merely the skeleton upon which the rest was formed, and on that respect they've done their job admirably.  That said, there are certainly some areas where a neatening could have been done, but these are largely in un-seen places, and I guess will get ironed out as required, or as opportunity presents..

Glad  that you guys seem to like it J

Cheers
Daz

It's been a long time between drinks.  I'm looking forward to another build thread with pics :D
Imperfections or not, your car is truly a sight to behold!!

Any chance of you driving it to Sydney so I (and everyone else here) can have a look in the flesh ;P

To "whet one's whistle", so-to-speak, I took a few shots of the treasure trove in the boot, just before I made the final drive the car would make as a 3S-GTE to WTF's magic factory.  The 3S-GTE still pulls really well, is in great shape with no oil leaks, starts first time, everytime - a truly remarkable motor for a 1990 car (Gen II).  146,584km on the clock, she has done her job, carrying me through to this point, which was always going to be the goal.

So - toys to install in the pics as follows:

The booty.  Everyone likes a big booty..

Inside the booty...

TRD steering wheel, TRD suspension bushes (front and rear), TRD gauges and a bit of the gauge pod;

Genuine Toyota brushed aluminium pedals, and custom machined TRD grille for foot rest, remaining gauges and TRD oil filler cap;

Late model steering column assembly and adaptor bracket for use with TRD wheel, Raybrigs front fog lights, TRD metal badge to be re-applied to TRD rear strut brace, which has been powder coated charcoal black;

TRD sway bars (front and rear), inc. all bolts and links, and replacement climate control unit;

And, the outgoing 3S-GTE

Looking forward to posting up progress pics once application for conversion is approved :)

Cheers
Daz

That is a niiiiiiiice booty!!! :)
With the border gauge pod are you going to wrap it in leather to suit your dash or just bolt it on top?
Also, what are you going to do with the 3sgte?

 Also, what are you going to do with the 3sgte?

Current plans for the 3S-GTE are it has a potential buyer (not yet confirmed), but until it is confirmed it could be available for sale at the right price.  Gotta be quick though - as once it's confirmed that'll be that.  It's located in WA, so factor that into any potential offer...

 Raybrig foggys look good, do you have any pictures of what it will look like ??

No pics of Raybrigs just yet, but they will be installed into the front bar standard openings on fixed brackets, wit a neat mounting for the switches in the dash.  They will also be sprayed with "Night Line" or something - basically a smoked charcoal tint to go over the top of the existing blue to match the rest of the car's scheme...

 With the border gauge pod are you going to wrap it in leather to suit your dash or just bolt it on top?

The current thinking is to mount it on top as-is, with two black retaining strips at each side.  Apparently, covering it in the leather is "too difficult" because of the changes in shape and profile, and could "lift", which would end up looking sh*te.  I'll be happy enough once it's scrubbed up and neat, and lit up with TRD gauges :)

Cheers

SW20_3sgte -
For some reason I want to see that car at every angle possible :)

There are some more pics here - http://www.mr2australia.com/MR2play/tm.aspx?&m=20720&mpage=1 - though I’d start from about page 10 to skip past all of my previous incompetence, and trials at kit fitting!

I’ve also got an engine build thread here - http://www.mr2australia.com/MR2play/tm.aspx?m=54420 so I’ll be updating this over the next 6 weeks, and try to keep the Showroom thread for the finished bits

Cheers
