I took the car out today at Eastern Creek and it started out well then ended badly - the engine is now dead AGAIN. #3 cylinder now has no compression. The earth rod on the spark plugs in #2 and #3 were burnt off so it looks like it was running too lean. I'm taking the head off tomorrow to have a look. Hopefully it's just a burnt valve and not a hole in a piston. I got some good in-car footage which I will post soon. I did have a good time and the Kumho tyres were much better than the old Yokahamas - I had traction this time! I still have a lot more to do to get my driving mojo back. It's been so long since I have driven on the track regularly. I'm still coming to the MR2 challenge - even if the MR2 isn't back together. I'll drive the GT4 instead.

Nice meeting you today. Great to see your car in person too, though it sounds like you've ran into some really bad luck ! Could you take the block out the GT4 and chuck it into the mr2?

The GT4 block wouldn't last long - cast pistons would break. Here is my video -

Thanks for the offer though $$$ are the issue. I'll fix it eventually. In the interim the GT4 will have to do!

OK boyz and girlz we have some action happening with the car. I bought a supposedly fully built 5SGTE from eBay and although it was still a good deal, the head wasn't built at all so needed reconditioning. I put some larger valves in it and new springs and it should be ready for pickup on the weekend. It has 3SGE NA cams in it. I picked up the bottom end last weekend. It had been built properly (kind of) though I got my engine guy to strip it anyway to check and it came up OK. He had to modify the crank though to fit the 3SGTE flywheel. We didn't elongate the holes in the flywheel like most people do. We redrilled the holes in the crank instead and fitted a dowel for strength. Once I get the head back, I'll put it all back together with new water pump, oil pump, seals, gaskets etc so it is perfect. I used the ATS 5SGTE head gasket as it apparently has much better water flow than just using a 3SGTE gasket. Apparently the 3SGTE gasket blocks off too much of the coolant galleries in the 5S block. That's the update for now. We'll see how it all goes together. Oh yeah - I forgot to say that I'll be changing from the gen2 3SGTE inlet manifold to a side feed 3SGE one. I have it here ready to go. More news and pics to come soon

Thats great news. Guess we will see you back on track soon. In May, there is a round at EC held by irace. You should come and enter the racing with me. Its televised so you can promote the forum for the world to see.

Update - the block from the engine I bought off eBay (which was previously sold by a forum member) was cracked in 5 places so I had to get another one. My engine builder hadn't noticed. Not happy! The new block is now ready and I am building it all now. Unfortunately due to me being a noob, I wrecked an oil ring when putting one of the pistons in. Now I have to wait for a new one to come from JE Pistons. The head is all ready to go with 1mm oversized valves, new springs and 3SGE NA cams. I have bought one of those custom head gaskets from ATS that have much better coolant flow than the 3SGTE head gasket. Here are some pics -

The coolant holes in the ATS gasket line up perfectly with the coolant holes in the 5SFE block.

Here is some proof that I am making some progress with the 5SGTE, albeit slow progress

The motor looks awesome. Sorry to hear about the cracks in the block. How does the ST215 intake manifold flow compared to the gen 1 3sge intakes?
