The engine is out again. It idles badly and I found that I have low compression in one cylinder. There are also small aluminium flakes in the oil. I dropped the engine off to Graeme Wilkins yesterday for him to strip it and identify what went wrong. I hope that it is relatively easy to fix. Sucks hey?

That's not good. Have you been out racing again? I know you had a meeting in June.

No. It's been sitting in the garage since June while I have been restoring my RA60 Celica.

UPDATE - The engine issue has been found. It is weak valve springs. The low compression was caused by the valves bouncing and eating into the valve seats. The valves I had were new genuine Toyota valve springs. If any of you are going to build a high performance 3SGTE, you MUST buy stronger valve springs, or the same thing will happen to you. My combination of oversized valves (1mm) and higher boost, is too much for the standard valve springs to handle. I have ordered a new set of Supertech valves, a new set of stronger Supertech valve springs, a new set of piston rings and new main and conrod bearings. The beast should be running again soon! I have also bought a Haltech ECU (E11V2) and an AIM MXL Pista dash to go with it. I'm not going to put them in just yet though will bench test them both and set them up as much as I can before putting them into the car along with my turbo upgrade that I will do sometime next year, funds allowing. I haven't bought the turbo or any of the other physical parts yet, though at least I now have the Haltech and dash! The car will be ready to rock at MR2WPC in January.

Good to hear that it will be back together and improved again for MR2WPC. January is getting very close now. Always worth having a close look at this car! Can you remind me of the cam specs. Manufacturer, lift, duration. Reason I ask is that it surprises me that brand new Toyota valve springs can't cope. Are the new Supertech springs duel springs or just stronger? You never appear to rev it very high so I wonder about the cam ramp areas. Thanks for keeping us informed.

The new springs are just stronger. I'll post a link to them later today. The cams I have are from a 3SGE engine. I'm not sure which generation - probably gen2 as a guess.

good to hear you diagnosed the problem Glenn, was this issue evident on exhaust and inlet valves?

Inlet. I have the engine back now and will start putting it in this weekend. I'll be busy driving Steve J's red EVO at Bathurst next weekend! Woohoo! #bucketlist

I have also been looking at that kit it does look quite fantastic. However with that drop block? for the rear toe arm, it's just the two bolts one through the hub and the other through the arm? What stops the block from pivoting on those bolts resulting in uncontrolled toe in/ out? Or am I overthinking it haha

There is a steel bush pressed into the hub assembly which the bolt goes through. The original bearing is gone.
