If you find bleeding knuckles, endless cursing and mild depression loads of fun, then these cars are definitely for you! :D

Looks like you are screwed jezza. Sorry, but buying another 'built' car isn't the answer, because, 90% chance their is something rooted with it that will need fixing. Unfortunately, its more often then not the case that you've got to do everything yourself to ensure it is done properly.

It appears that your tight on cash, which rules out selling the MR2 and buying a newer more reliable and less problematic vehicle.

I am toying with selling my EVO 8 (really doesn't suit my current daily driver duties - far too much mileage then I am happy to put on the evo). At the same time, I am wondering why the hell I don't just instead get rid of the MR2 that has cursed me for a million years, hot the Evo up a bit and buy a cheap daily.

Apart from the looks department, I consider it an all around better car. Not as much 'fun' being a 4wd, but even in basically standard trim it has a reasonable amount of herbs. With a bit of a fire up its arse I am sure it could be 90% as fun as an MR2 whilst being more friendly to work on, being more comfortable to drive, having more aftermarket support.

Good luck with your decision, however, know that whatever SW20 you have, you are going to have (or will soon have) something or another to get fixed or repaired - these cars are old, however, they are also getting very cheap. So the concept of writing mine off on a race track (or having an off in general) doesn't concern me so much as say, the Evo.

Almost sig worthy!!!

Nah just putting it on coz I'm getting rust taken out. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone.
Plus I want to get my front guards pumped SO I can drop the car more BEFORE I get my wheel alignment done and ALSO find out what is bent and if it matters now. My mechanic said the coilovers definitely helped

Yeah man. Of course. There was one for sale here a week or 2 ago with a viscous LSD. Bargained the guy down to $850 and then he suddenly stopped replying to my emails, wouldn't answer his phone etc.

Now I'm waiting for another one for $1k or less. In the meantime it's still drivable when double clutching My workmate tried to drive it a while ago and that was a laugh. Crunch crunch crunch vrooooom (couldn't get into gear) crunchhhh [88]

Dont be suprised if a good condition box is gone before you even get a chance to think about buying it
everyones after a good condition gen 3 box
the one that was rebuilt is a very good price
id get that if i were you before its gone
2nd and 3rd synchros are the biggest if not the only failures on these boxes and they have both been replaced cant get any better than that
considerign just to open up a box will cosy you $500 plus labour on top of that to remove and refit it

stock clutch is good for 200kw, but if you want aftermarket
exedy sports tuff heavy duty ones are pretty good with a similar to stock pedal feel about $400ish
dont get a 3 or 4 puk type clutch for a daily driver as they are not designed to be slipped get a full face type clutch (exedy one is)
change the rear main seal while your at it too about $30 or so.

bursons,
as i said before take the car to a proper MR2 mechanic they will get it all organised for you as they would have done 100s of gearbox chages and clutch installs

btw $400 is only for the clutch itself labour is on top of that not too sure how much
but if your replacing the whole gearbox then it will be included as while they have the box out they can change the clutch too.
so cost of box + labour to remove and refit box + cost of clutch

Marquis Automotive in Doveton. Same place that does REDMR2RED's and spudman's cars (and probably some other members). Really nice guy and 10000x better than the other place I was going (****loads cheaper too)
