Parting out - serious question

Please don't flame me, this is a serious question and I've been racking my brain over it for weeks.
I think it might be a good idea to part my car out and start fresh (something that runs perfect and preferably rebuilt).

My car has quite a few mods. If I was to part out the whole thing would I get my money back? Or should I do a partial part-out and then sell the car in stock form?

Or is it worth holding onto my car and pouring more money into it?
To get my car fixed will be like 50% of what my car is worth. Then there's still no guarantee that the engine will hold on forever.

It's almost always better to bring the car back to stock and sell the aftermarket parts, this does rely on things being sold though.

Simplest way to do this is a simple pen and paper comparison. Sell price as is plus stock parts which are no doubt lying around your garage Vs stock price plus parts value plus cost to bring back to stock.

Well I didn't do most of the mods (especially engine mods) so I would need to obtain stock parts from elsewhere (maybe sell aftermarket parts on an exchange basis).

Do not forget the storage issue, it will be many months or even years before it is all gone by parting it out.
It may look OK on paper but so many other issues, people checking gear out, having to send it off ect are all a real hassle.
Have many parts in my gararge that are to be thrown out after many years, CBF selling them.

What exactly has your car got that you say is modified apart from a ebay cooler and an aftermarket stock looking exhaust and the hks bov
I would assume you will keep the wheels and new interior, stereo etc along with the other body kit you have .
You will waste your money parting it out, stick with what you have now the paint is actually in good condition albeit being a half decent job and a bit of overspray which can be fixed easily
You need a good condition gearbox, and fix the bent control arm or whatever it is and that pretty much it.
ive spent more money fixing my car than for what i bought it and there others here that have done the same
you will just join the club thats about it.

I just feel like I'm p1ssing money away into this car. I think I could get what I paid for it (stock wheels and interior) which wouldn't be a huge loss for me. It's definitely HEAPS better now than when I bought it. I'm sure someone would pay $9k for a GEN3 with syncro issues.

I've got my eye on a black rebuilt one.

which is a Gen 2 and def needs a respray. probably has gearbox issues just like every other MR2.
you have a better tuning option with the car you have now
just add a gen 3 power fc which is easily available and plugs straight in provided the P.O did the conversion properly
if and when it blows up get it rebuilt.

at the engd of the day its ur car and money
id be more than happy if i had your car.

Exterior respray is nothing. Wouldn't need door jams or engine etc. and it would be black, my favorite colour.

As it is, I've got to respray 1/2 my car anyway..

I dunno.. Maybe I'll EOI my car for $9k (stock wheels, stereo, seats) and see how it goes. I think that's a fair price for a GEN3.

I priced up a rebuild for my car.. Wayyyyy too much. I'm gonna find out what kind of rebuild this black one has. If it's forged then I'd probably get it.

even when you buy cars that are rebuilt etc, they always need more work. Fix what you have, you already know its quirks.

Just fix what you have. Buying another car (especially a rebuilt one) will lead to more money down the drain. The car's aren't new anymore. I honestly can't see the problem with yours. All you need do is go to someone that can fix the rear sussy & rebuild the gbox. I guarantee there's a lot of ppl on here that have synchro problems. You can even try using ATF in it to stretch the life out a bit longer (that's assuming you already tried penrite gl4 etc).

Thanks guys. I guess I've gotta stop running away from the problems, harden the fck up and deal with it..

Would it be worth getting a whole engine/gearbox and putting it in? Or too expensive?

his gearbox is leaking, most probably the likely cause of synchro issues due to not enough oil in there.
take your car to someone who knows about MR2s they will be able to help you out
im going to my mechanic this weekend, feel free to come and see what he says

    cheers
