Km are getting kinda high on the engine and I know the past owners have given it a hard time. Might let go soon. Plus it has an oil leak. I thought it might be worth putting in a new engine while I'm doing the gearbox.
Oh and then there's the issue of the missing engine number... heh..

other prob with putting in another engine gearbox is who know's how long that'll hold together? the newest halfcut your gonna get is still over 10yrs old.
i'd just pay for the rebuild of the gearbox. where is it leaking from exactly? i have seen gearbox casings welded up before if it's cracked, tho it needs to be done with the box disassembled.
and what's "missing" about the engine number? has it been ground of?

There is apparently a big crack in the gearbox housing and will need new syncros. Other than that the box is veryyy stiff. You've really gotta put some muscle into changing gears and occasionally I can't get it into first and have to take off in second [xx(]
Will a rebuild really fix all this?
And yeah, half the engine number is ground off. My old mechanic suggested stamping a new one on when the gearbox is out.

why the hell did the previous owner grind the number off?
well take your car/box to a rebuilder and see if they can fix it.
do you have a quick shifter on it? that can make the shifting quite stiff.
or it's been run without enough oil-due to the crack- and there's more than just syncro damage.
it may be worthwhile calling a few places to source a brand new box. i think they're sub 3k in the US.
try amamaya on toymods, road and track, dylmrt and some of the various toyota dealers even in the NZ.
do you have a quest for more power at some stage? then just drive the car as is(engine wise) and keep on top of maintenance etc and save for a forged build.

I think Serpico bought the halfcut from the wreckers with the engine number already missing. The car is still registered with a 3SGE. I know that this could face some serious legal issues, that's why I want to do something about it asap. quote: Originally posted by just_ace do you have a quick shifter on it? that can make the shifting quite stiff.
Yeah I do have a quick shifter, but so does my workmate and his gearbox is very smooth compared to mine. quote: Originally posted by just_ace it may be worthwhile calling a few places to source a brand new box. i think they're sub 3k in the US.

I'm not really prepared to pay $2k+ for a gearbox. The last 3 I've seen sell went for $400, $400 and $850 (all with working syncros). I would love more power but I can't justify spending money on such a cheap car. I've already got more than enough money for a forged build but I'd rather save that for a house.

Grinding engine number off is illegal IIRC. quote:

go read stuka thread and you will see that just cos you buy a car a rebuilt engine dosent always mean it is good.
sounds like you need to take your car to some experts.
Track right in Dandy specialize in cars that have suspension damage from accidents. Lots of smash repairers in the area use them. Ive had previous cars repaired there, and highly recommenced them. They will cheek it out and tell you what needs to be done not yeah it could be this.
I know you think Richmond is a bit far but I would suggest you get Ian to look at mechanical/gearbox side of things. I highly doubt any joints around Dandy have much experience on mr2, not that any mechanic cant service then but you will be better off with some one that knows them. Most likely end up being cheaper in the long run.

yes but 2+ k gets you a NEW box which won't have any issues in the lifetime you have it.
sure you can get a sub 1k gen3 LSD box, but they can still have issues later on down the track, i mean think about it. the syncro's were working in your box before (most likely) you didn't have enough lubricant for the syncro's. the syncro's are eventaully going to go in all the e153 boxes, it's called wear and tear. just the later model boxes last a bit longer and they aren't as old to start of with
if you can't handle a car with potentially on going issues then i'd suggest you find something from a dealer.

Jezza i think you should just come to terms with the facts.
- Mr2's and any other sports orientated cars will cost money that you will never get back. - Every sports car will have wear and tear issues relative to its age and they wont be cheap to fix properly. - Anything done to a sports car on the cheap will end up costing more in the long run. - Mr2's are not practical, cheap or special but they are poo poo loads of fun.

MR2s are practical for me [:P] I never need any more than 2 seats and I think I've used the boot twice.
Having said that, I need to get my bodykit to a panelshop soon (while I'm getting rust fixed up I may aswell put the kit on).. Easiest way to do this? Should I attempt to fit the kit myself just so I can drive it there? [:P] Or will that end badly in my hands?
