I totally agree with you mate
When I was a kid i remember seeing a safety ad on tv about looking to the right, looking to the left and looking to the right again before crossing a road ... if all pedestrians can stick to a simple rule like this then these accidents would most likely be reduced

But saying that, I also think there will always be problems with idiotic drivers speeding and ending up in similar situations

Sorry, I disagree David. Every road user handbook in Australia insists pedestrians have the right of way. I've lost a friend that's been hit by a car & almost lost another. I've got no tolerance for people who decide to speed when they don't at least have a very clear vision of the path ahead. Seen many close calls in residential areas. Keep in mind, what would normally be a safe distance to cross, suddenly is not when the car is doing more than twice the speed limit.

I do get your point though, some clowns cross the road with the mentality that cars would slow down/stop as though they were a truck.

Maybe blow off valves (really loud ones) and over sized exhausts should be compulsory for P platers so everyone can hear them coming.

(^ Pedestrians only get given way to by vehicles entering or leaving the roadway, on a pedestrian crossing, or at intersections where the vehicle is changing direction) ((and all the other ones I haven't mentioned))

Guys we don't know the facts yet to judge or defend anyone.

We don't know whether the poor woman was crossing at lights, a pedestrian crossing or just jaywalking. Also we don't know for sure yet whether the p plater was speeding, street racing or driving sensibly.

Hopefully, more info will be forthcoming or sometimes you have to wait for a court case or coroner's report which takes forever and must be very frustrating for all involved.

That might be right Jay, but the law of common sense tells me as a 100kg dude to give way to a 1.5ton car!

To argue you point, if the car doesn't have clear vision of whats ahead, the the pedestrian most likely wouldn't have a clear vision of the car coming either. So choose a better place to cross the road. And if you can't judge the speed a car is approaching, then don't cross, wait for it to be completely gone. Thats what I'm teaching my kids, if there is a car moving anywhere, stay on the footpath until its gone.

Agreed with you completely here wiz. But I think there's something wrong with the way the media is portraying this.

The emphasis has been placed on "street racing" and "p-plater" rather than the real tragedy that is the loss of life.

And MY biggest issue is that if they do find out that it wasn't speed/street racing related, they won't make a massive headline about it saying:

P-PLATER OBEYING ROAD RULES KILLS PEDESTRIAN

If they genuinely were unlucky, then its just going to get swept under the carpet, and all anyone ever remembers is that allegedly there was a p-plater who was street racing who killed a pedestrian.

And I'm with senol on this too, I'm not a big fan of P Platers either, but this just is media dramatisation at its best. And for that reason I hate the media more.

Since when was common sense actually "common" lol Your counter-argument makes sense, but the fact is people cross for convenience too. There's also no blanket law on where on the road you must cross. If you were in your residential area & were just crossing the road to see your friend, would you triple your walking distance just to have a clearer vision? I'm 62kg & cbf doing that. Works both ways, don't speed in those areas & when crossing, be extra careful.

Wiz, newspapers won't be so eager to post the truth when it comes out. They often prefer to exploit the negative possibilities to amp up the public & get people reading & seeing the accompanying ads.

Dudeman, I didn't quite mean right of way literally. The RTA's always been trying to emphasise that drivers be aware of pedestrians.

Either way....Heart goes out to all those involved. There's someone out there that lost their mother/sister/friend & a youth that'll be scarred for life.

Yeah common sense isn't common, and in some cases completely contradicts the actual law. Don't get me started on how you can be sued if someone breaking into your house hurts themself.

Oh yeah, don't forget there is a law about jay walking. Wonder why its called "Jay" walking hmmm? [88]

Yeah it says, "Jay must walk to the train station and then catch the train to work. Jay may not drive his mr2 to work"

"The word jaywalker traces back to 1917, though it may have been in use as early as 1900. It is generally considered to have originated in the United States, possibly from the city of Boston. It is a portmanteau of the words jay and walk; in this context, jay is used in the obsolete slang sense, referring to a stupid or dull person, or a rube, i.e. someone from a rural area and not familiar with "city ways". At the time, vehicles and traffic signals were a new concept, gaining popularity in the larger cities, so this term would have been used to describe newcomers who were unfamiliar with these recent developments and by extension, to ridicule people who behaved like newcomers but should have known better"

Remind me not to goto Boston. They might think I was named after a moron. Lucky for me I catch a train to work & don't cross any roads on the way [:p]

Dudeman, is it ok that I drive my Honda to the station though? Surely the law can meet me halfway on this one

Driving a Honda is enough punishment in itself. Sort of like the scooter/ obese woman concept. Can be good fun, but you don't want your friends to see in in the act.

Condolences to both families as I'm sure even the driver will be suffering but I do have to agree with all the above posts. Tarmac for cars, pavement for people....simple. It shouldn't be that hard for people to understand.
