It doesn't say that the driver was speeding or intoxicated. Maybe the woman was just careless when crossing the road.

Not great news either way but I have to agree with Jezza, with all due condolences to the families of the lady.

This is typical media just hyping up the fact that it was a sports car driven by a P plater, even before knowing all the circumstances. And when all the circumstances do surface, they never publish them in an article.

I don't think it was hyping it up that the driver was in an mr2. Just says "...she was struck by an eastbound Toyota MR2"

More pointing out the P plater bit. Maybe they will ban P platers driving cars with more than 1l capacity??

Vague article. SMH has never liked P platers.

Gonna sound like an arsehole here, but I don't see how a driver can be at fault for hitting someone crossing the road.
Unless she was crossing at a set of lights and had a green walk signal, don't step out onto the road if there is a car coming. Thats it, full stop. Even on zebra crossings you should wait until cars have come to a complete stop before starting to walk. Now if a car hits you because you made an error judging its speed, or how far away it was, or didn't look properly, or had your ipod on and didn't hear it, or have a bad hip and can't walk at a fast enough pace to cross safely, or were running and slipped, etc etc, then you shouldn't be crossing the damn road unless you've got a little green walk symbol.
I think if we had a few more people getting hit every so often, people would start using their brain and thinking twice when crossing the road, instead of asuming the car has seen me and won't hit me, even if I dawdle across the road and make them hit the brakes to avoid hitting me.
Now until its stated that the lady was crossing at a set of lights, which having a quick look at google maps are few and far between on Beach Rd (apart from a couple right outside the police station, which I doubt is where someone would be street racing), I don't think the media should be crucifying this driver just because he is a p plater.

I feel bad for the ppl involved , media isn't doing a good job but at the same time people need to wake up and use more caution when driving

P-plater or not it doesn't matter, I dont think the msg is gettin through to a lot of drivers

but seriously, the road is for cars, not people. my a very close childhood friend of mine was killed when a l plater ran over a heap of people at a bus stop in Sydney. that was shocking. and was not her fault at alkl.

if in 60 years. this lady hasnt learnt to get out of the way of cars on the road. then she mustnt be the brightest spark..
even my dog knows not to take on cars..

It says "may have" in the opening line, and then later on "confirmed" . Considering it also states they hadn't spoken to the driver at the time of the article, I'm not sure how they know that 100%.

Geo I think more people need to use more caution when crossing the road, the amount of idiots running across 3 lane roads, with heavy traffic during peak hours is ridiculous. Quite frankly I'm amazed that more people aren't killed.

"A woman has died after suffering horrific injuries when she was hit by a P-plate driver on the NSW south coast during a possible drag race.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was crossing Beach Road at Batemans Bay when she was struck by a Toyota MR2 about 8pm (AEST) on Thursday.

The 19-year-old driver was taken to a hospital where he was subjected to mandatory blood tests.

A police source told AAP the accident was a result of street racing.

Police have spoken to a number of witnesses and expect to conduct a formal interview with the driver."

This is such a ridiculous accident.

Ive been hit by a car before too.. i was young and stupid didnt look both ways. I can't think of any real situations where a driver should be at blame for hitting a pedestrian crossing the road. besides the obvious, running red lights etc.

This lady probably didn't even look to see if anyone was coming, probably had hearing issues too, especially if the P-plater was allegedly "drag racing" if you don't hear an N/A MR2 coming theres something wrong with you...

Just another excuse to blame P-platers really. I do hate most p-platers tho.. especially the bogan variety in utes and falcadores.
