Yeah---my filipina missus says I am no longer cost effective so I had better behave or she might trade me in on a younger model.

By the way, can anyone remember what this thread was all about, lol.[(#)][%]

That's something men say, not women!

Don't worry Wiz, I got your back. She'll come around after I teach you to cook kare kare & adobo. By that time, she'll want an MR2 for herself too...hehe Besides, you've had quite a few cars, surely an MR2 turbo deserves to be a part of that list.

if you buy a wideband and have an aftermarket ECU, do you need anything for the sensor to function properly? Just hook it up the the ECU generally and the ecu gets an accurate reading? I mean i ask cause im sure ive seen wideband sensors for much less than $300 (minus a gauge).

In general with wideband O2 sensors, there are various brands of 'boxes' (eg. Innovate LC-1, Tech Edge 2CO, etc) which have wires for the actual wideband oxygen sensor, and various other wires or cables (some which are for 12V power and ground, and some which can be connected to an aftermarket ECU). In terms of the connection to the ECU, some brands of the aforementioned boxes just have a variable voltage output (dependent on the AFR) which can be connected to an analogue input on an aftermarket ECUs. Some other brands also have an RS232 communications cable which can send serial data to compatible aftermarket ECUs (this data will include the AFR of course, but it could also provide the ECU with other info like sensor faults).

So you basically have this:

wideband oxygen sensor in exhaust stream (not all wideband O2 sensors are compatible with all controller boxes)
\/
wideband oxygen sensor controller box (eg. Innovate LC-1, Tech Edge 2CO, etc)
\/
variable voltage signal wire and/or RS232 communications cable from that box for connection to an aftermarket ECU (or electronic dash-mounted gauge)

The aftermarket ECU uses the AFR reading (from the variable voltage signal or RS232 communications cable) to determine if the fuel mixture is rich or lean, and then the ECU can determine how to correct it by varying the fuel injection pulse-width.

NOTE: you can NOT disconnect a factory narrowband O2 sensor and then connect a wideband O2 sensor into the same wire on the factory ECU!

Thats what i wanted to know, so all widebands make use of some sort of controller to convert or change signals.

Yes.

Some widebands do 'narrowband' emulation.

Yeah---my bad, I misunderstood the concept in my orginal post and I now know that the wideband sensor enables a programmable computer to be tuned much more accurately in regard to the air/fuel ratio thus creating more power and that is what happened in my mate's case with his n/a.
In answer to previous questions I have now been told that his computer is an Adaptronic and his tuner is the guy that takes his dyno and team to most major east coast motor shows including the summer nationals.

Also, obviously turbos would be tuned with a different air/fuel ratio with this device.

Ha-ha---ok Jason. Perhaps you can talk the little woman out of murdering me if I do.

I can see the headlines now---'well known MR2 enthusiast found dead across blood soaked front seat of MR2 turbo, it is not considered suicide at this stage'.

FRONT seat?

Yeah---I did notice that boo boo later but I was too lazy to edit it at the time.
