Wideband 02 sensors
I don't know whether you guys have heard of these but a friend of mine recently fitted one to his 1990 SW20 N/A with some success. As you know when these cars are put on a dyno the air/fuel ratio tends to start off at an ideal 14.5 approx. and as revs increase out to the maximum power reading the a/f ratio normally richens to around 11.5 which is certainly not ideal for a n/a. Apparently the sensor can be programmed to keep the a/f ratio at around 14.5 right across the power band.
My mate's car is virtually standard apart from an aftermarket programmable computer and prior to this mod it was dynoed at around 97KW ATW which is quite good for a 1990 n/a. After the sensor was fitted power increased to around 105KW ATW which does not sound much but there are also other benefits such as a happier motor and better fuel consumption.
I think this sensor costs around $60 to $100 depending on the brand + tuning. It would possibly be also beneficial to turbos however I think they need to run richer at the higher end of the powerband.

WTF?
Firstly, a wideband O2 setup with gauge will cost you a minimum of $300. Secondly, to make any difference in the tune, you'll require aftermarket EMS.

you cant program the sensor to keep the AF ratio at a certain level..
The sensor just reads the AFR, the ECU needs to be tuned to get the target AFR.
Your sensor wont give you any power EVER it just reads what is happening - it does not make any changes..
Think of it as sticking a thermometer in your fridge, you now know your fridge is 3° but I sure as poo poo wouldn't expect my fridge to now hold 4° all the time and have 1/3 the power consumption..

Sounds like one of those ebay interceptor type thingies....All it'd do is give the ecu a false o2 reading.
Just read your original post properly. You mentioned he already has a programmable ecu, in which case he could've just tuned it richer/leaner with an original o2 sensor & ended up with the same gain.

Aside from all the other issues mentioned above, 14.5:1 certainly is not an ideal A/F ratio for best power on any type motor. It's very close to stoich which is the ideal point for lowest noxious emissions. Peak power usually comes up around 12.5:1, and best economy usually up into the 16s or so.

All I know is that it is an aftermarket programmable ECU but I do not know what type and I am aware that the it can be programmed richer or leaner but would it hold the same a/f ratio right across the powerband without help from some other component? It's quite possible something else was added. I certainly don't claim to be an expert and I am only passing on what I have been told re power gains etc with his n/a SW20. He is not the type to tell bul#$@it but I respect the opinions of you guys. I only thought it was worth mentioning as there is always someone on the forum looking for more power from their n/a and to get any noticible power gains with an n/a you normally have to go down the expensive track of bigger cams etc. Probably easier to buy a turbo in the first place provided you are not too young coz you will get burnt with insurance costs.

Yes the programmable ECU will allow it to hold whatever AF wherever you wanted.
the Wideband o2 sensor just measures AF.

Ha-ha---ok Jason. Perhaps you can talk the little woman out of murdering me if I do. I can see the headlines now---'well known MR2 enthusiast found dead across blood soaked driver's seat of MR2 turbo, it is not considered suicide at this stage'.

I managed to buy an MR2 turbo while I was married ... I still have the MR2, I'm no longer married but I'm still alive.
