Since you have already gone through the trouble of cutting all those metal out, have you thought about re-angling the radiator\fans as well as putting a flat tray underneath?

There isn't much room to angle the radiator to where I would like it (half inside the frunk!), but I'm looking into another idea that might help do this :)

Tonight I removed the old stock thermo fans on the AW11 and fitted a single 12" thermo fan from Supercheap Auto. I decided to do this for a couple of reasons: 1. The second thermo fan has only ever worked when I had airconditioning in the car, which it no longer has and the second fan no longer works, so it's just dead weight. 2. The primary fan that does work is on one side and doesn't blow the air directly into the next bonnet vent (sorts blows to the side of it.) 3. The stock setup has a steel sheet metal shroud which has a fair bit of weight in it. So I pulled the radiator out and gave it a quick flush and a scrub while it was out, then moved onto installing the new thermo fan. The old fans compared to the new one. Saving around 50mm of thickness. New fan ziptied on... Slightly more dodgy then the normal mounting kits... (Zipties lasted for 8 years on my old S13...) And the view through the bonnet scoop. I'll be back to working on the bonnet scoop this weekend, I've booked the workshop at work to access the mig welder and I'll weld up the firewall cut out properly, then seal it with chassis sealer. After that it's onto making the rest of the cowling to finish the vent off and move onto body filling the gaps and edges to make it look better.

nice work Aaron. the photos don't do it justice, but I'm sure the sanding and filler make a world of difference to the quality of the finish. good to see you didn't't shroud the fan, it would only work against the airflow then the car is moving. be interested to see if there is any difference to the handling on track as well.

I've still got a bit of elbow grease to put into it before I'm happy, but it's getting there. The paint on it is only temporary so I can drive around on it, but it will get a better spray job once I strip it back and finish the filler and sanding work (200/400/800 grit + spray filler + primer). I'm very keen also to see what it does on the track, while I can hold a steady line through the kink at Lakeside, it does feel a little floaty at 180km/h through it. If this will make it keep the nose down so I can push even harder, I'll be pleased. Will try to do a tuft test in the next day or two as well to see what the air is like when driving around.

yeah, i'd really be keen to hear about that. I remember when robYob took his 1.5 to phillip island, he said it got very very light over 200, probably made twice as bad due to the 3s in the bum. I'd love to do the samething, but alas i live in the nanna state, so it's not really an option on a daily driven car. I might have skipped through a bit, are you going to make an air guide between the bar and radiator??

From the information I could interpret from the National Code of Practice (NCOP), doing this kinda of modifications shouldn't be illegal. The vent in the bonnet is below the surface of the original impact zone, it doesn't protrude from the bonnet like a WRX scoop or such ilk, which are generally an impact hazard to pedestrians. The cutting of the front firewall should also be fine as it does not affect the chassis rails or structural members in the front. The only thing I think they could really make a fuss about is due to the direct path of air flow, if the radiator was to crack at the core and begin leaking, it could allow coolant to spray back across the wind screen. And yes, there will be an air guide between the radiator and the vent, I'm hoping to make a start on it tomorrow :)

awesome. although it may be fine, I think it would draw enough attention that I would get picked on for other things ie. turbo, motec, no emissions equipment etc. I think I'll save it for the plausible point in time it becomes more of a track car and not a daily.
good luck with finishing it up, it will he interesting to see the impact on lap times etc when complete!

Paint be gone. Currently doing some more filler work on it. While waiting for filler to harden, I moved onto building a cold air intake. This is only like 3 years over due, but it's happened none the less.... I used glass filler to mount a pod filter adaptor into the monster air scoop. Which has some flex hose going to my ebay pod filter enclosure. There will be a 45 degree silicon hose to go between the pod enclosure and the intake plenum, since I require a 3" to 2.75" reduction. The enclosure will also be mounted off the gearbox using some aluminium supports that I'll make up shortly. Just a couple more things like a new battery clamp, coolant filler mount, a tidy up on random wires/hoses and the engine bay will look something close to clean....

Your pumping out the work on that car. You will certainly have plenty of track time to enjoy it.
