Might be better than having a sub box behind the passenger seat. Makes it hard to put the seat all the way back.

Hey let us know which subs you get to retro fit into the boxes, I want to replace my factory ones because they're falling apart.

The only ones I know that fit in the stock location are the Band W5-1138SM 5-1/4" but it requires trimming the metal from the sub removing the excess to fit into the stock location. Only place I know to get them is from the US.

These are what I was looking at, I just want to confirm the measurements before I buy them,

I will report back how they perform.
Unfortunately I still have not had any reply from the guy selling the boxes with all the other gear on here so may have to look at some other options.

Holy cow $489! I'm after a budget pair lol, I've got an aftermarket head unit but still on factory wiring and amps hence why I'm looking at the budget Tang bands ($60 US each) to replace my worn oem subs.

Yeah they are not exactly cheap but I think they produce good quality sound or at least they will want too lol.

I would be curious to see what you think of them if you went ahead with them the Tang bands.

Based on what I read on random MR2 forums apparently they sound pretty good on oem amps and sound even better if you get a proper amp. I'm no audiophile, but these are intended to be the factory replacements so if they sound the same as the oem subs or better then good enough for me.

I just had a look at some of their speaker range and some of their speakers sound reasonable especially for the price, I may reconsider my options yet.

Thanks for mentioning them.

Yep part-express is where I'll get them or through their ebay page.
The Tang Band W5-1138SM 5-1/4" Neodymium Subwoofer is what was recommended to get as they appear to be the least hassle to install. i.e able to cut through the thin metal frame/mounting plate.
https://www.parts-express.com/tang-band-w5-1138sm-5-1-4-neodymium-subwoofer--264-831

Maybe have a look at this US MR2 thread to see how they install these subs.
http://www.mr2.com/forums...tall-Tang-Band-W5-Subs

I guess you could fabricate a mounting bracket to install the ones you linked, as the frame looks quite thick to cut into.

Well which ever 5~ inch sub you decide to go with there would need to be some sort of modification to get them fitted to the oem box which I'm sure you'll figure out.

I think going through their ebay page would be a good option as you can then have cover if they were to get lost in shipping or something. those ones have quite a lot smaller magnet on them don't they! I am guessing no matter which aftermarket subs we went with some form of modification will probably be needed.

Just received my new head unit the other day as well so I am planning a complete revamp of my system.

No, it had already had aftermarket pioneer speakers instead by the previous owner which sound quite reasonable So I just want too be able to improve the low end response.
This will also be the 3rd head unit I will have put in it since I have had it and now this one should be the last one as this one should do everything I want it to do.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread as I've had a pair of boxes for years and never did anything with them.

Last night I ordered a pair of Polk Audio MW 5530, they're discontinued apparently but there's a few sets still on eBay. With similar specs and reviews to the Tang Bands they should be a good option. Also they're cheaper, and fit within the stock housings with no cutting required apparently.

What amp and head unit are you planning to run Nik?

I am keen to hear how yours sounds Bill.

I just purchased a Kenwood DDX917WS head unit I have got a Rockford fosgate 4 channel amp but I am considering changing the amp so still undecided on that.
All the gear I am removing from the MR2 is now going to a new home in my newly acquired daily so I can kill two birds with one stone.

I spent most of yesterday wiring in my new head unit.
https://www.ryda.com.au/kenwood-ddx-4017bt-multimedia-car-stereo

Mounting an Alpine PDX-V9 under the passenger seat.
https://www.ryda.com.au/alpine-pdx-v9-5-channel-car-amplifier

Wiring the JL Audio crossovers under the drivers seat. These ones I believe.
https://www.ryda.com.au/jl-audio-c3-650-6-5-150w-component-car-speakers

It's the first time in two years the car has had a functioning stereo.

Everything is ready to go for the sub install, just need the subs to arrive.
