Radiator and Roll Cage Update
2015/10/21 21:22:30
(permalink)
So the Radiator arrived yay! The roll cage is nearly done. I went past for a quick look, it looked really good. I elected to save some money ($900!) and paint it my self though.. The bad news is: the rollcage guy was using his angle grinder around the driver's foot well, when its wheel caught on a bunch of wires in the area.. it unplugged the plug from the footwell area, spun the wires around and round and cut some and stripped some.. I went past to have a quick look, it looked bad.. I was in so much pain I didnt wanna look at it.. I just left.. I hate it when extra work is generated for no bloody reason.. The wires I'm talking about are basically a bunch that goes from the engine bay to a plug somewhere in the driver's footwell (including few that farm out to the Aurion key barrel (for immobiliser purposes). Anyone (2GR guys?) can tell me what the plug in the driver's foot well is for? (I'm guessing something to do with starting the engine etc) I'll start digging in the MR2 wiring manual when I get the car back, but it's not gonna be straight forward being a 2GR converted.. Although it looked messy, I'm hoping the wire colours can help me re-connect everything up..

WTF?? Is this guy a tradesman or a mate helping you out for free? If he's tradesman he'll have insurance. Thats some complicated wiring there and if you are paying a professional to do work for you his stuff up shouldn't ruin your car. Don't worry about hurting his bloody feelings, wires getting ripped out may have come right out of plugs and you could cause major damage if you put them back wrong. He's going to have to fork out for it to get repaired properly.

He mentioned that he'll drop the price to account for the error (I didn't care to ask how much as I was more worried about the damage than dollars) Unfortunately he's the best roll cage fabricator in Adelaide.. (prefer not to mention business name)

Well, better get a sparky in to give you a quote.. Can't imagine its going to be cheap. Definitely not something to scrimp on and stuff up. He's got business insurance, he'll have to make a claim. Of course he'll do the right thing, ruining someone's race car wiring is not good for a business reputation. Fixing up unfortunate errors generates happy customers and recommendations.

The plug may be for the fly by wire pedal.
As Dudeman said above, I would be getting him to fix it for you, his mistake.

Thanks for the input guys. All the wires (including throttle pedal plug) are now repaired (funded by the roll cage workshop). Special thanks to Paul who helped me with wiring diagrams and photos. The car is back at home. Roll cage looks sweeeet! I am the worst when it comes to painting.. First coat is on but the bloody wind decided to pick up and pretty much ruined my day :( I'll give it a light sand and do another coat tomorrow. Then probably leave it for a week or so, and give it a very light sand just to get rid of the glossiness.

Coming along nicely. As far as the roll cage paint use satin or flat black if you don't like the glossiness look.

I actually dont mind the glossy look. I was just worried it might reflect sunlight etc on the track on a sunny day. I'll give it a try and see I go.

Getting there
2015/10/31 18:37:29
(permalink)
Alright, so here's the thing: I need to get the car to Canberra in late Nov.. I wont have a trailer until early/mid next year.. So I thought stuff it, I'm driving! The car is still road registered, so I thought my mission today is to make it look as subtle as possible so it doesn't stand out as a track car like dogs balls on the freeway.. I spent Friday afternoon quickly butchering and hacking the interior (and crying) to get a fair chunk back in to achieve my "I'm just a road car, nothing to see here, leave me alone" objective. Unfortunately I had to do the interior "modification" quickly (and without too much of a cosmetic care), otherwise I would've spent days and days trying to make the modified interior look nice, knowing it's coming back out in a month or two! (plus I wanted to spend some time with the family :) Stil plenty to do.. but at least I know the 16th of Nov track event is achievable!

Today I thought it's time for the Mishimoto radiator to go in. The radiator is in, however the stock fans don't line up without modding their shrouds.. So I jumped online and bought me a Mishimoto radiator fan shroud (which I know I should've purchased them with the radiator, but $ didn't allow back then) The old radiator was VERY tired.. corrosion everywhere.. things snapping off like a mofo.. The two hoses were fine though, so I reused them however I used proper hose clamps instead of the stock crappy ones. On the "I'm a road car, leave me alone" theme, I thought let's put the fog lights on and replace those tired front parkers/indicators. Rear wing is waiting for the Autopista wing. Front bumper is waiting for the gen3 lip (which I hope I can install without taking the bumper off). Next job is putting the windshield and 1/4 panels back on.

You can install the front lip without removing the bumper, so don't worry about that.
