Lucas's MR2 SW20 Supercharged 2GR-FE

Ladies and Gents,

Introduction
For those that don't know, I used to own an evo 9 (tracked regularly) and later an evo 6 TME. I had to also sell my previous 3VZ-FE SW20 due to multiple extended overseas work trips, which was a bit sad because I didn't get to turn my vision for it into reality.

Purchase
For some reason, V6 SW20's started to pop up for sale out of no where a fortnight before my departure on my most recent trip..
Thanks to an unsatisfactory experience with a 1MZ-FE sale transaction, I managed to convince myself to go all out (financially) to grab the weapon below.. A supercharged 2GR-FE hard top SW20.. I literally had to fly to Melbourne, drive it from Melb to Adelaide, back to Melbourne, then back to Adelaide to be able to get it registered. Then 4 days later I left overseas again, and the car sat in the garage..
Fortunately, this trip was unexpectedly very short (only 2 months, comparing to the previous one, which went for 9 months) and I got back 1.5 week ago :)

Current Configuration & First Impression
The current configuration (without listing everything) is pretty simple:
- Supercharged 2GRFE
- E153 (Quaife LSD)
- Gouki exhaust headers, Magnaflow exhaust
- BC BR coilovers + sway/strut bars
- Porsche 911 (996) brakes
- ABS and power steering removed. (Possibly aircon is next)

Very happy with the performance so far. On the track last week, it just felt good/strong/natural, and I was very impressed in general.

Future Plans
I am still in the process of developing my vision for this car. I'm planning on tracking it regularly for now.
I know it will eventually end up a full-time track car, but I'd like to get there gradually.
The theme I am leaning towards evolves around the following principles (no particular order) :
safe structure, simple system(s), reliable power, light weight, cost effective.
Few knowledgeable guys on here will hopefully help me achieve that ;)

Wishlist
Plans/dreams for the future (no particular order):
- Bucket seat/harness
- Roll cage
- 2-piece rotors
- Front splitter + rear diffuser
- Haltech Elite 2500 (it'd be nice to tune the thing and raise the rev limiter at least) + IQ3 dash
- E85 (free extra ponies and it smells like Jack Daniels.. Cant go wrong :)
- Short ratio steering rack (nothing off the shelf that I am aware of, so it will have to be custom made I guess)
- Light weight body panels (engine lid, boot lid, bonnet etc..).
- Decat pipe

Although it will take some time (to save up!) for me to get these parts, having them in my head has been really good to stop me from splashing money around on cosmetics and/or ineffective "upgrades" :(

Advice/comments are much appreciated :)

    So good!

Is there any chance you can join the other SA MR2 owners driving over to NSW for the trackday challenge in January?

There is an extensive build thread for my car here: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=18316

Gee, that's so nicely done, looks stock under the engine lid. Cant tell it's a tyre murderer from outside.

As far as a shorter steering rack goes, the Spyder steering pinion looks almost idential in dimension to the SW20 one, but has a different gear on the end.  If its a swap-in part, then you will drop the lock by almost 1/3rd of a turn.

Ah yes, Charlies last monster build! I had a little drive and enjoyed some passenger runs in this car. Its pretty mad!
The Evora SC GT4 version of this engine (lower comp/forged pistons/12 psi/E85) manages 500flywheel hp all day long. God knows what the torque figure is. They use the MOTEC but if you are looking at the Haltech, you can have a look at my car at MTC as it has been fitted with the Haltech. Haltech as been using this engine as a test mule at the factory so it will be easy enough to get up to speed.
I (and many others) are very interested in a rack upgrade for a SW20. I was looking at modding a AW11 as they have a quick rack available.
Keep an eye on the intake temps before pushing it too much. There is a heat exchanger option which is fitted between the SC and the engine. I would recommend this being the first thing you do.

Brake Pads Installation 2015/09/06 12:57:35 (permalink)

Thanks for all your input/comments guys :)

I thought I'll try Project Mu's HC brake pads.

Rear ones went in no problem.
Front ones, not so easy.. I had to shave off bits off their base (off the steel base, not the actual pad material) to make them fit/sit inside the caliper properly..  I wasn't too impressed about turning a 30 mins job into a surgery (in the rain too..) which requires me to seek assistance from a friend of mine who's better at cutting steel!
And yes I triple checked they're the right pads for the calipers.. but I guess these things are expected with aftermarket parts..

They're in now and working :)  I will have wait for the roads to dry up before bedding them in though.

With these pads and current tyres, I'd like to see myself in the low 1:20s in Mallala (I'll be happy with 1:23 TBH) We'll see if I'm dreaming or not..

Couple of photos below, my friend conducting the surgery, as well as a quick photo of the pad after (number 1) and before. (I forgot to take a photo of the old vs new..)

EDIT: Just went for 2 series of 10 bedding in stops, they felt pretty good. I'll see how they go on the track next time I'm there.

This build looks mental. Keen to see it get some track work, have you got any rough guesses on the 0-100 times/kw figure?

That's a fair point. It'd have at least be pushing 250kw though, or around that. Cause isn't a 2GR around 230?

Was just asking cause I'm still tossing up between a 2GR or 3SGTE when I hit my opens

My guess is that it will dyno around 220rwkw. 2GR with gouky headers and better intake runs around 185rwkw.This is approx 92% of the advertised 202 kw crank figure.Toyota rates the supercharged 2GR at 241 kw so using the same maths (rough I know) we can expect 222kwkw (near enough to 300 horsepower). Will be interesting to see the results while you are stil running the factory ECU. Kw figures are fine but the real story in the torque with the TRD Aurion providing 400nm and provides magic grunt as Lucas has now doubt already experienced. Some interesting figures here to whet your appetite http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/26861-djkors-aurion-rev-2/page-18 . Tasty quarter times too for the TRD Aurion and the MR@ is some 350 or more kilos lighter

Running 13s in an Aurion is crazy. I'm sure the MR2 will take flight with the same running gear haha

I agree, low 200's KW sounds about it I think.

On the track, I found that the torque was signifincalty helping pulling me out of the corners linearly and smoothly, and that's why the car felt "easy to drive hard" (to an average driver like me), as you can simply feel what's going on and what's about to occur and you can act accordingly.

I'm still running stock ECU. Still hoping that someone cracks it soon, otherwise I'll be going for other solutions (i.e. Haltech, AEM, etc..). However safety items will most likely come first.. (anyone got info on the most suitable Velo seat that's going to fit in SW20 and provide good head clearance?)
