well 1.08's not to bad i think i started at that or possibly quicker, but the biggest areas on the track where you can monster people and lap times are under brakes into karrosel and into hungry, but it takes alot balls and nice warm front tyres.

Hi all,

New to the forum and looking to meet more mr2 drivers that like to hit the track. I'm In VIC

Recently moved from a unreliable Honda civic/crx to a 2000 MR-S and have noticed the community for these cars isn't quite as large lol :) so searching where I can for tips and tricks on the setup of an MR car. Thought it would be good to get involved in here.

Best time so far for the car has been a 1:40.9 at Winton.

Come along to Haunted Hills on saturday for a look at the Vic Hillclimb Championship round #1...at least 2 MR2's competing.

Might as well post mine up here. The following setup netted me a 1:14.9 at wakefield park with a passenger on board.

- 1986 Series 1 AW11 Hardtop
- GZE conversion, cusco 164mm crank pulley, HKS pod. 102rwkw
- Series 2 front brakes with slotted rotors and EBC redstuffs.
- Stock series 1 rear brakes with dead pads
- Goodridge braided lines.
- Bald+hard kumho V70A's in 205/50/15 on sportmax 501's 15x8" +15 offset.
- Koni dampers, eibach springs. Urethane bushes
- Alignment; +5 degrees caster, -1deg front camber with 0mm toe, -2.5deg rear camber with 2mm total toe in
- Stock front swaybar, no rear swaybar (series 1's didnt have one)

The above lap time was done on my third ever trackday, and the car has been in massively different states of tune each time, so there is still quite a bit of time in that setup just from my lack of skill/practice. Unfortunately I will never find out though as Ive almost finished my turbo swap lol. Aiming for sub 1:10's once the turbo is up and running properly and ive installed my series 2 rear brakes and some better tyres.

Good to see there's such in depth discussion about track setups here. i'm mostly on toymods but this thread has been a good read.

I ran at Wakefield Park with Circuit Club. Was a damp day with showers and dry spells so a bit of everything.
As usual I had probelms in the morning which took till late afternoon to sort out so it was really just day to enjoy driving instead of working on the car.
Car had a miss due to something which I think was spark blow out. This was over 3500 then worse as the rpm increased.
There were other issues but time was 1.10.6 for the day with only one session timed.
Surok drove the car for one session with myself in the passenger seat. He has plenty of potential managing about a 1.12 but nothing confirmed as no timing for passenger sessions. He did state he enjoyed the car and would drive it again given the chance but it needs more power to make more inroads of lap times, Still its all about having a fun day which we did. With no accidents it made it a successful day too.

TRDEE, well done with the 1.14. Great time a NA.

Was at the same day as B24. He took me for a ride towards the end of the day and man that car is insane. Almost as crazy as the driver haha. And it's much louder than it sounds in the you tube videos. Thanks for the ride mate!

I managed a 1:16.4 after the track dried out. It was actually really grippy which was surprising.

Car: 97 SW20 Bathurst
Motor, chassis, suspension: stock
Tyres: front- Maxxis ma-v1
rear - Falken ze912

Lap times are up on the Circuit Club website and photos should be up in the next couple of days.

No worries Adrian. I think the oil leak(and dampish track) was playing havoc with the rear end of the car which has something to do with the semi drift session we ended up with. Turns out the cooler fittings were loose causing the leaks. They are now fixed, the car is in the garage, the front links are now sitting on the bench ready to go too.
Well done with the 1.16. I will come for a drive with you next time.

Cheers

Glad the leak was only a minor issue. You'll have to take me for another ride when your car decides to stop going sideways =P. I'll definitely take you for a spin next time. Just hope I don't run out of petrol again. I could use a few pointers. Really hoping to crack a 1.16 flat.

Thanks for the offer Rory, but Im up to my neck in this atm so I have to ride it out.

Most of the issues are my own doing, plus its all part of developing reliabilty in the car. Mike Naveybox stated "Cane the car till it breaks then make it stronger'. Im doing my best..
Another plus being, it didnt happen at a race meet.
Another plus being it will be quick once I manage a trouble free day. Im aim for 1.06 on a dry day, no gremlins, 200kw on the same tyres. Quicker when I upgrade to dunlop.

Are you keeping your car or exporting it to England?
Im interested in the doors if you would like to move them.

Cheers

We fixed it before it came off the trailer. IT will be relocated to improve cooling ib a week or two and yes we will aim for a cleaner run next time out.
remember, I will always have a few litres if you run out mate.
As for pointers, get your hands on Rfactor, download Wakefield Park circuit, get your hands on a steeering wheel and practice, practice practice. Buy a book called speed secrets. Very useful book.
Also happy to come out for a few laps with you.

See you soon enough

Unfortunately the export option was too hard and expensive. Garage space over here costs ££££ so for this year I'll have to stick with my track days in the BMW.

Surok - hope you like the car - convince Rico that it's exactly what he needs and then I have an excuse to come home and go to the track with you guys when I hand it over

Are non MR2 lap times ok?

E46 330ci - nitron coilovers, oil cooler, H&R sway bars, Rogue Engineering strut bars and full nolathan bushes, Yoko AO48Rs and tricky brakes and a nice seat Sparco

Goodwood - 1.34:2
Oulton Park GP (damp) - 2.08:5 pre suspension upgrade
Silverstone GP - around 2.25s pre suspension upgrade
Cadwell Park - coming up May
Croft - coming up July

I have some video that'll be up on youtube shortly if you are interested in these UK tracks - Oulton Park is very nice.

Why don't you stick on a pair of those scoops I have if you want better cooling? They actually make a big difference (if you have something to cool e.g. intercooler or in your case and oil cooler). They mostly just sit and look nice on my car. But actually I noticed the engine compartment cooling fan doesn't come on now after I pull in from a session so they must be doing something.

Oh and photos from the day are up. Good shot of me in the dirt, a few shots of your car and 1 mad photo of Surok cleaning up your oil slick haha.
