Engine oil would be fully synthetic, but specifically which brand & viscosity is really personal preference these days. Personally, I use 10/60 Castrol Edge (which is considered too thick for most). You'll find the majority use a 5/30 from any of the major brands (Royal Purple, Castrol Edge, Penrite, Motul, Mobil 1 etc etc).

As for transmission oil, thoroughly recommend a GL4 (not GL5!) 75/90. There aren't many options available unfortunately. I use Caltex Easy Shift (GL4 75/90). There are alternatives you can try if your synchros have become knotchy/crunchy & you want to prolong a rebuild (ATF Dextron III).

Dishonest Hong Kong EBay sellers!

My Beams half cut was advertised with on 47,000kms on it. They included the speedo which shows that reading.
Since i received it i discovered old service stickers on it, the newest showing the next service due at 152,000kms or by 1/6/2014.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vwkqkls660m6ygn/IMAG0673.jpg
(the date on the pic uses the Japanese dating system if your wondering why the year shows 25)

To be honest i wasn't surprised, i actually was expecting to find something like this. It actually makes the engine closer to my chassis which has now done 130,000kms. It's just disappointing that these companies have to be so dishonest. I would have bought it anyway.

Just serves as a warning for everyone not to believe what is advertised.

The engine and all components supplied do look to be in good condition so far :)

Glad to hear that all the components look to be in good condition despite the lie about the mileage.

I reckon you should have a not so gentle "discussion" with the sellers at this point and ask for some $$$ back.

Yeh this was the reason I decided to go local but whatever what's done is done just keep envisioning that end goal in mind
Nulon stuff is pretty good but I personally use Penrite HPR 5W-40 (acts like a 30 but better heat resistance like a 40 at the track). Either way can't go wrong with synthetic for engine/tranny oils!

I've sent an email to the seller suggesting they might want to provide me some 'compensation', otherwise i'll have to provide an in depth response on their Ebay page. As i said, i sort of expected it though. I thought i'd be better off importing it myself as i'd bought engines in the past from Australian importers who'd promised the motor had only done less than 50,000 kms only to discover that it had done much more and died after only 15,000 kms. When i contacted the importer after that, i was informed that they can't guarantee the condition as they only know what they were told when they purchased it.
As i said, i kind of expected it, i just didn't think that they would be silly enough to leave proof of their deception lol.
I would have been more surprised if the 47,000 kms was genuine considering the motor is 15 years old.....
It doesn't effect my plans at all thankfully :)

This is the response i got from the seller....

Hi Rick,

We are really sorry to hear that. But the fact is that the gauge shows 49,046 km when we pulled it off from the engine motor, we never tried to altered the km shown on the gauge.

We fully understand your feeling but we never tried to cheat any of our buyers. When we disassembled this engine clip in Japan, the gauge showed 49,046 km so we listed it on the listing.

It costs us so much money to get this rear engine clip from Japan and frankly, we almost didn't earn money in this transaction, we did it just for our interest. We have been working in this field (remake used parts) for over 10 years and we are enthusiastic in MR2 motors.

Once again, we are really sorry for this condition. With much regret, pls let me know if there is any part you need for the project and we will give you really nice discount if we have those parts in stock. :S

LIES LIES LIES. Yeah right, of course, 'we did it just for our interest' LIES!!!

It's total lies, you caught them out. Get onto ebay, make the sh!t stick - get compensated. You caught them out red handed.

They think it's ok to offer you a 'really nice discount'?? I guess thats ok by them, especially since they finished off with a :S.

More like, "You caught as out trying to deceive you, please don't tell ebay. We'll even chuck in a :( to show that we are unhappy that you found us out"

Thats a steaming heap of lies, don't stand for it.

and how do you know that the cluster is even from the same car the engine came from?
Regardless of what happened on their end the fact is you were sold an engine/halfcut on the basis that it had only covered 49K KM. As Ebay would put it, Item not as described.

I would reply back and say you didn't get what you paid for and are happy to accept a partial refund (of whatever amount you think is fair). If they decline, start the dispute process. Who cares if they are MR2 enthusiasts, they are trying make money and will say anything.

I'm looking forward to following your build though. Will be a nice machine once done.

They wouldnt do it out of interest. they would make alot of money selling the other components off the car they cut up.

I agree with the above. tell them you would like a refund of X dollars, (maybe 50%) and if they dont go ahead with it, then start the dispute. you will win. there was a sticker on the engine and they ignored it.
