My car has a HKS Pod filter and a HKS hi flow muffler (pretty much a cannon) I get decent throttle response, but yeah mines pretty much stock. its been lowered with some rotala sport tires etc. I havent done much to it but it goes hard.
Theres no point trying to squeeze power out of a N/A motor, like itll cost you 3 grand for you to get maybe 100 horses extra? and thats if your lucky. What ive concentrated on in my car is handling, because thats what the MR2's great at. The springs are stiffer in the rear so that some of the weight transfers to the front to help balance it, I have bigger slotted rotors and hi performance brake pads and a short shifter setup You can keep up with most commodores and even beat them, but as soon as you hit mountain roads (take it slow at first) you can brake later into corners, steer harder, grip more, and accelerate earlier. handling is the best tool you have in the car and it is resonably priced for what you get
Brakes, springs/coilovers, tires and tire size, wheel size, strut tops and bars.
if you do go for motor mods, try and get less restriction in the exhaust setup, an intake wise, I would keep the intake box, as it stops the hot air from the engine getting in. my pod filter gets fairly hot which is not good

ahh awesome man, so i just checked out ur posts, have u recently gotten your p's? That makes me happy that ill be able to keep up with commodores alright, statistically i thought i should but yeah now you've said that :). So you rekon go for handling more then engine mods? have u got staggered wheels? i believe these wheels are the same on all 4 corners. but ill have to check when i get it.

Nah I dont get my P's till november, And commodore wise, its all about the driver aswell ahaha.
But yes handling is what I would personally go for. its cheaper and you can have alot more fun too
Wheel wise Im running some crappy Volk Knock offs. Their 17x7 running 195's on the front and 205's on the rear. Hopefully I will be buying 17x8's for the front and 17x9's for the rear, running 205's or 215's on the front and about a 225 on the rear.
Also check for any rust while you can. In japan the roads are salted which of course promotes rust. I know mine has a few spots on non major places but just check while you can :)

thanks man, and i can go for my P's once i get some practice in a manual car (my parents only have automatics) so pretty excited to get them. The fella selling it said theres no rust at all but if there is some it'll get found in the roadworthy i spose :)

yeah youll want to find it before road worthy, its not good and it might fail, and rust is a terrible thing. you need to look for structural rust. check under the front of the car and have a look for any rust.
Rust is like a cancer, if its somewhere it can be everywhere so look ahaha :)

Dont stress too much about the white parkers. They don't have to be like the later model 'all clear' corner lights, just the centre so they are 'yellow - clear - yellow' It will be pretty easy to find a set of YCY lights.
