Hey everyone

Thought now that I have two mr2's, I should probably start a build thread that I will actually update. Most of the things posted in here will probably be about my AW11 though.

Anyway, onto the cars

On the left we have my 1990 SW20 Hardtop with a 3sge, HSD coilovers and a couple other goodies here and there. Currently the daily, and I'm in the process of restoring the interior to factory

On the right is my latest addition to my garage, a 1987 AW11 hardtop with just a 4age. a strange car as it should be a series 2 but has series 1 suspension. never the less, still awesome! bought it off danielk. Will hopefully become the street rego'd track car :)

Pretty sure the aw11 has done a head gasket though as it smells very oily, so that will be a rebuild job. good thing I got a couple of engines with the car!

Unlike my SW20, I wont be dumping thing thing on its guts.

has some resonable condition recaros in it. Might upgrade to fixed backs in future.

overall its a sweet little addition to my black hardtop collection. Needs some bushings and other things replaced too as the handling is a bit funky

Hopefully ill keep ontop of this build thread!

Also, if you want a hand getting the MegaSquirt up and running, I've pretty much got all the wiring, pinouts and firmware files from Dom's car and my old 4AGE 16v installs.

yes and MR2QIK, both hardtops too ;)

Aaron, Ill take you up on that offer of the ECU pinouts etc, Thanks :)

Jacked the car up today to have a snoop arround, needed to tighten the alternator belt.

Still keeps squeaking, so will have to look at that again when i have more time. Found the bad bushing too that gave the car some terrible handling characteristics, will have to replace it at some point

O2 sensor is unplugged but it seems that the other end of the plug is no where to be found? strange. Also found the TPS was unplugged, yet the car ran fine before that? Who knows, plugged in now

Other things ive noticed is that the car smells a bit oily when running, I know the car had overheated in the past due to a water leak, so Ill be watching the water and coolant over the next few days to see if theres any signs of a BHG

Checked out the last bit of rust on it too

Couldnt find my flappy disc today so thats a job for another day. was just going to grind it back a bit and see how deep it is. Looking like it will need a new piece welded in though.

Unplugged O2 will make it run rich, unplugged TPS will allow it to still run, but you don't get Acceleration Enrichment working and you'll notice that it's a little more jerky in transient throttle since it's relying purely on MAP or AFM.

So maybe the engine is okay, and its just overfueling due to the O2 sensor. Will check this out later

    Thanks again Aaron!

When the O2 sensor in my 16V crapped out, it went from 500km / tank on the highway to just a hair over 400km. I ended up putting in a wideband sensor instead and fed the stock ecu a narrow band signal from that (LC1 has a narrow band output). The little 4A is pretty tough, I over heated mine a few times at Wakefield because I didn't bleed the coolant system correctly and it didn't pack in a head gasket or warp the head from those experience. You'll find a good service and it will probably be purring like a kitten for a fair while longer :)

Started playing arround with the megasquirt, have fuel but no spark, will have to look into it later when I have more time.

Have been really paranoid about this thing having a blown head gasket... It smells oily, dosnt blow smoke but after I run it and drive it for 5-10 mins, the inside of my oil cap looks like this:

It seems to develop a very fine, foamy, milky substance in it. Oil so far though has remained clean, and the water seems fine too. I can hear the car misfiring every now and then at idle.

I suppose all i can do is flush and bleed the cooling system, let it run for a fair while and watch the oil/water till I get a definitive result

Picked up all the spare engine parts too, hopefully sell them off so that I can afford to do the head gasket, if it needs doing :P

Have noticed the car has a high idle too, arround about 2000rpm, fluxuates +-200rpm though

At the end of today though I looked into my garage and admired the two mr2's briefly, before being told to get one of them out so my parents could use the garage two :P

    Hi Eric,

High idle speed is a common response to broken thermostat, (staying open), however another concurrent symptom will be lowish water temp showing on gauge.
With mine I found in warmer weather, once temperature was up to normal, idle speed dropped back.

Redtarga on this forum has some literature about thermostat & cooling circuit.
