Major update....
Now running on Gen 3 electronics! no more AFM
- my US acquired patch loom was all sorts of messed up. (common wires, such as distributor signal, were just plain missing. I needed to pull apart a water-logged corolla ECU to get some new pins and solder them in)
- The MAT i bought from Berk in the US. It replaced the cold start injector and bolted on the underside of the manifold, near the throttle body
- For the IAT, i simply used the engine bay temp sensor.
- the MAP sensor i acquired from a friend..... quite cheap......
- the Gen 3 ECU i stumbled across on Boostcruising. listed only as a 'MR2 ECU' for $70. the photo showed the part number, it matched the required pn: 89661-17460
- the injectors i am sourcing from MR2OC. (someone there also has a gen 3 pressure sensor for $25..... MAP sensor maybe? - i've asked for that too....)
- I added the MAT and IAT sensors.
IAT was wired to a stripped AFM plug which then plugged into the AFM harness. (THA to E2)
MAT is wired directly through to the patch harness. (THAM to E2)
The IAT harness was the only part of my wiring harness i damaged. i cut the connector off the loom and soldered it to the AFM plug.
- The replacement ignitor was bought off a mate with a few camry spares (he still has one if anyone wants to purchase it for $80 shipped)
part number: 89621-16020
- I bought a basic 3" metal bracket from Repco for $20 to fill the void of the dreaded AFM.
the hardest part was, of course, the patch loom.... although that SHOULDN'T have been a problem if the company actually did what they said they would!
second, was installing the MAT.
third, was working out why my AC was engaging, but the VSV wasn't energising. this meant the AC would come on, and drop the revs.... (useless on idle)
It turned out i just needed to ground one of the wires to get a proper connection. in testing, it would open with 12v and ground to it. from the connector, it had 12v but obviously didn't have a connection to energise it. it is now grounded at the VSV connector, and its all good.
I think that's about all there is to it.
As it stands, my engine is running a bit rough anyway. i am still waiting on a response for a set of Gen 3 injectors... and need to purchase a 4 wire O2 sensor... then, i'll give a report.
it has a HUGE kick around 3800 rpm.... which is not a good thing. it feels as though its pulling the timing. as long as i just baby it a bit... it'll be fine.
One thing to also bear in mind... is that this ECU is tuned for 100 octane.
i'm running RON98, in 30+º temperatures, with 80% humidity.
this is well and truly the WORST case scenario for temperatures.
In other news.... i now have my completely new exhaust system!
consisting of the 3" dump pipe with 120 cell cat that was purchased in our recent group buy.

All of this is in preparation for moving to Adelaide in a few months time.
