Strut tops interchangeable?
Just wondering if the strut tops from early models and later models are interchangeable? It's probably not okay to use different years for left and right of the car, but say you're using early model for front strut tops and later model for rears?

Strut tops? If you mean top mounts (top hats) it shouldn't matter The strut dimensions on all models are the same, even though early models had gland nuts and later models were sealed. Although Toyodiy give a different p/n for early and late model strut tops (F+R), the only difference I have noticed is that with rear top hats the bolts are slightly longer on the later models, otherwise they look the same.

Coolios thanks Ian I can get a set that's cheapest if I combine the front pair from the early and rear pairs from the late, that's why I was asking.

"It's probably not okay to use different years for left and right of the car" Shouldn't matter for the rears, but not ok for the fronts. I just carefully measured some front strut tops that I think came from a '95 Bathurst, and I found they are slightly different to the '90 model ones on my car. These would give more caster, because the top of the strut would lay back slightly. So you wouldn't want to mix those up a have different ones each side.

BTW that may be one way to increase the front caster for the early models without going to aftermarket stuff. My front caster rods are already maxed out giving about 4 degrees, and the front of the tyre is getting a bit close to the inner fender liner anyway. I'm not sure how good the bearings are in the '95 front strut tops that I have but I may do a bit of experimenting to see how much more caster I can end up with them.Could be interesting.

You probably know that you can also dramatically increase front caster by simply reversing the top mounts front to rear. I have never tried it but I suspect it may give a bit too much.

With the '90 model front strut tops if you rotate them 180 degrees, the top of the strut will be moved rearwards increasing the caster. Some people put them in that way by mistake lol.

Prices quotes from Amayama - 48609-17030 – Front early $100.
- 48750-17020 - Rear early $142
- 48609-17040 – Front late $114.
- 48750-17040 – Rear late $96
Cheaper to go Front early and late rear hehe

For early models Lithia quote $89 USD +ship. I have wondered if the old bearing could be pressed out and a new one fitted. Could be cheaper. BTW, I found early and late rear top mounts are interchangeable. The difference is in the mounting stud length.

BTW Tree, I have just reversed my '90 model front top mounts by turning them 180 degrees,(Scallop to the front) and found no need to even remove the wheels to do it. Doing this did not appear to change the camber or toe, and seems to add about one degree because I now have over 5 degrees caster with the caster rods maxed out.
