First Run For 2013 - Sunday the 24th of February - Roll Call
FIRST RUN FOR 2013 The first run for this year will be held as previously advised on Sunday the 24th of February 2013. The Run Manager and I did the recon yesterday which was fortunate, as I will explain later.
Although there has been some lobbying for the first Run to be a big one down south via the Lions Road, we thought we'd start with something a bit less strenuous and keep the "Fredhoon Memorial Drive"

for the cooler months. The Lions Road and some others in that southern area also suffered badly in the recent rains, and with the problems we had last time crossing some of the Lions Road culverts with front spoilers bottoming out we'd like to do a proper detailed recon before the route down south is finalised.
The Run in 12 days time will start at 10.00am for a 10.30am departure. The start point is the first section of public car park at Ferny Grove Railway Station, from where we will travel via the Sandford Valley, Dayboro and parts of Mt Mee to the lunch spot at Kilcoy. There is a good BP servo just before the Ferny Grove Railway Station on the outbound side so cars can be filled there if needed before meeting up. After lunch we will travel through the Somerset Dam area and wind our way back to Brisbane via some great back roads around Fernvale and Marburg. The total Run distance is about 210kms.
We had intended going back over the Mt Glorious/Mt Nebo Road and those great twisties. However, the old military saying "time spent in a good recon is never wasted" proved to be true again as the Mt Glorious/Mt Nebo Road has just been closed because of washaways after the heavy rain, and it is not expected to be open to through traffic for at least two months. On the recon we talked to one of the reconstruction supervisors and were informed that the road surface had eroded under the tar which had caused instability on one of the main bends. A nice thing to find out in advance of making the drive!
As per normal Club SOP the Roll Call is below. If you put your name down you will receive a detailed Run Sheet via PM a few days before the Run. Hopefully we can make this first one a good start to the year, and keep a lookout for the full Run Calendar coming soon. Kathy and I had our house inundated with water while we were away so major repairs are required and some things have had to be delayed slightly.
If you haven't thought about the Nationals in Tasmania in late September/early October just a reminder that now is the time to start doing so. The Nationals promises to be a great event and the roads in Tassie are certainly worth the trip.
