Car won't idle

When I first got my SW20 GT in November last year it would sometimes not start first go. Then it would take 2 or 3 goes to start it in the morning, but now it won't idle at all without stalling. Has new spark plugs and leads, and from what I can see there isn't any vacuum leaks. Anyone got any idea or has had a similar problem? Really driving me nuts having to try and start it every time I stop at traffic lights.

Should note that you have an aftermarket ecu installed.  Has the tune in the ECU been verified to be good?  Unfortunately its a complete can of worms, being a modified car.  That is something that noone tends to mention to people that are buying a modified vehicle, that invariably something will go wrong or play up and a certain level of technical nouse is required, or deep enough pockets to go pay a good mechanic.
 
The issue could be one of a number of things.  Have you tested spark quality and operation of fuel injectors?   Jam a timing light on the car and crank it over.  See if you are getting pulses when it should be trying to fire.  If you aren't there could be some wiring issues or a dirty crank or cam angle signal to the ECU.  The reluctor type sensors in earlier toyotas can be notoriously noisy and sometimes ECU settings need changing to filter out the noise.  Someone should also have a look at the tune for you and make sure its all AOK, safe and there are no major flaws in it.  Cold start are one thing but if you are having issues on hot start there would need to be some dramatic issues in the tune.  Cars actually aren't that fussy when it comes to starting especially with a warm engine, fueling doesn't have to be EXACT so any errors would have to be vast so I doubt this will be the problem.
 
Vacuum leaks shouldn't cause too many issues as I would suspect your car doesn't use an AFM anymore which is what is generally sensitive to air leaks.  MAP setups aren't as sensitive when it comes to vacuum leaks.
 
It is harder to start under any specific conditions?  Or just all the time.

That's one thing that wasn't done, tuning. The guy who owned it who installed it done it himself and said that it was in need of a tune badly. So that could possibly be my problem even though it is worsening?

It is harder to start first thing in the morning. And it does idle if I hold the accelerator pedal in. Not sure about the fault codes, never looked into the ecu, the laptop I got with the program on it won't work.

Damage depends on how good or bad the tune is.

if it was really bad it could lean out and melt a piston.

Then id say your tune isn't really bad.

Using oil is just how things go with old motors. How many k's has it done?

Smoke could be worn rings due to age or over fuelling for safety.

10w a single weight?
Or a multi weight oil

If your running a 10w I wouldn't be racing anyone it will give the engine no protection at all..

But if your running a 10-40 or 50 that should be fine..

10 only means when it's cold and the. Second number is how thick the oil so the 10 would become as thick as a straight 50 is once warm to give you added protection for when you give the engine a hard time..
