How bad is the gearbox? There's more than a few of us who just grew used to a little notchiness, just time the shifts better.

Actually it's not too bad really. I hardly ever crunch now. Maybe on the next run I'll get someone to have a look/drive & see what ya reckon.

now they tell me she's leaking from the sump. He actually took me out to the workshop where she was up on the hoist & showed me. So she's in again next wednesday. Another $250.00. She's worth it tho. Originally he said they'd do their best to catch the oil that's there because it's almost new anyway, but then changed his mind & said they'd put new stuff in without charging me. He said the only thing needed was sealant. Is that right? I didn't have the courage to say to him that I wanted a more senior mechanic next time tho.

hey, yeah only sealant used, some have sump gaskets but mr2 does not. just sealant, i guess it could be leaking slightly and now is comming out more due to not being able to get out from the rocker cover? but it dosnt look like a big job for 250$ then again im not a mehanic. Drop the sump, clean it, sealant= put sump back on; but who knows i dont have the bgb to tell me whats involed in resealing a sump.
but just ring him and ask him to put someone else on it. i cant ask that its not my car. :)
at least your mr2 will have had a good flush of fresh oil ahahah

just ran some numbers and its a decent price, the sealant is 50$ plus oil, apparently jarrods boss said he has to charge for oil, thus why its 250$ plus labour, not to bad, of course its not hard basic no how could do it yourself and save 150$ but nevermind, at least with toyota your guranteed it will be done right if not the first time they will fix it and make sure its not leaking elsewhere :)
but looks like this will fix your leaks.

Thanks. "do it myself"?? hahaha you jest, lol. They might have let me go underneath & have a look, but............ hhmmm..... getting up the courage to ask for someone else to do the work....... thinking............ after all, that is why I decided to go there instead of the mechanic shop I've gone to for ages.

Sometimes it can be hard it identify where leaks are coming from if something is leaking above it (eg. your cam cover) but after they cleaned it and test drove the car, it should have been REALLY easy to see if it was leaking that much... Just sounds like there wasn't a high quality of workmanship.

Hmm some mechanics just get frustrated quite easily being that mr2s are difficult to work on

Gatesys SW20 yeah, the mechanic that was on it, is very lazy quoted from other mehcnaics and has quite a hatred for mr2s ahah
but all the mechanics hate working on them.
And this is exactly why I don't send my cars to dealerships.

You can get good & bad anywhere, whether it is mechanics or builders, or even hairdresssers (hehehe , had to throw that in). If they don't fix it right the first time, they have to fix it at no charge. As the customer we can ask for someone more experienced ....... (courage needed for some of us to do that.......... lol) And as a dealership they should have courtesy cars if it is taking longer than expected, other mechanic shops often don't have loan cars. There was no problem on the initial service they did for me a couple of weeks ago, so I'm comfortable that the more experienced guy will do a better job.

Back from another trip to the Toyota Doctor. She was ready & waiting when I got there yesterday. No more oil leaking onto the garage floor overnight. Now to see if my temporary fix stops me getting a wet seat........ . Haven't got around to getting those guide thingy's yet.

Great to hear that your baby is not leaking anymore.........you are right about getting good and bad everywhere, but I still believe Toyota are honourable. Yes, you will sometimes get young and inexperienced mechanics - but everyone has to start somewhere!!
I expect they know you now and will look after you......and you have an inside contact, hey Ethan?? ;-)
Cheers, M
