Good to know you can at least test by re-installing the side to side cable, I'm sure your local mechanic would be able to do that. Does mean another $140 in labour or so but if it fixes the problem then happy days.

Yeah, I know he "could", but not sure he wants to & i'm not sure if I want him to.
Daniel said he should be able to do it, if I can get he to his work.

Daniel had been really busy & getting her over to him was a challenge, so I sucked it up & went back to see my local mechanic last week.  Didn't see Marco, but the boss said they would continue the challenge.  Booked her in for yesterday.
Marco did the work again, swapped the original side/side shifter back in.  He apologised for not checking more thoroughly.  Same length, but there is a part of the original that is slightly adjustable, that wasn't on the replacement.
Picked her up yesterday afternoon.  Fully expected to have to pay for the labour, but the boss said no payment necessary.
And Marco's mood was much better having fixed the problem.
Took a looong way home just to be sure & took a drive this afternoon to our favourite spot, just to make doubly sure that everything was ok.......... she is now shifting like she should
Feeling much better about continuing to let Marco work on her.

So simple yet so tricky. Some of these poor little cars are not operating as they should because of these sort of out of adjustment problems. Troublesome cable was possibly from a different year model. Hardly any of them are still in original configuration having been buggered with by a number of owners.
You are very fortunate with the local mechanic as not too many of them are competent much less willing to continue to chase down a difficult to find problem. Shout him a very nice present and a thank you card.

Ah, she gives me interesting things sometimes.

Christmas eve, quite a bit of dust on windscreen, so flicked for the washer/wiper, yep that worked.  Flick off........, flick off..........flick off.......... wouldn't stop until I turned the car off.  Turned back on........ washer/wiper still going..............tried again..........  still going.............
Got book out to find out where fuse is, neighbour over the fence was outside & noticed i seemed to be having a problem, so he came over & took the fuse out.  I tried to put it back in later to see if it, had re-set or something, but I it was easier to get out by feel, than to get back in.  Could feel where it had to go, but couldn't get it clicked in.

Earlier this year, occasionally when I turned the car on, the washer/wiper would go for a few seconds & then stop, so she must have been letting me know the potential of a problem, lol.

Googling/FB auto electricians in the area, there is one open tomorrow .

What't the possibility of it being a quick easy fix?  Suggestions of what it might be?  Someone said it could be a relay, but I just searched on Toyodiy & I couldn't see a relay for the wiper/washer.  Could possibly be a switch?

Hi Shaz.
I don't really know but my guess would be the trouble will be in a set of electrical contacts located at the base of the wiper stalk. Did pulling the appropriate fuse stop the wipers but leave everything else working ?
If so then you can continue to use the car ok until getting it dismantled. Steering wheel needs to come off to access it. Disconnect battery first to prevent short circuits.
Should be a fuse holder tool thingy in lid of engine bay fuse box. Makes removing and installing fuses correctly so much better.

Yep, everything else is working properly, just no washer/wipers.
Checked FB & found there is a local Auto Elec open tomorrow, so will take her there & see what he can find.  Will show him what you have said.

It sounds like you just need to replace the wiper stalk.

Went to Auto elec.  They are really only open for batteries & emergency stuff today, but he had a look for me any way.  Put fuse back in.  Wiper/washer didn't auto turn on.  He turned it on & it stayed on, but he gave the wiper stalk a flick & it stopped.  Did that a couple of times & managed to stop it each time......  I was just turning off, so if it does it again, I'll try the flick & hopefully it will work.  He also said probably the wiper stalk.  It appears that it is probably the button on the end sticking on.  Not sure if you can buy just that part.  Toyodiy looks like it's an all in 1 part.  Corolla spares has the part for $175, but if I don't need the whole thing don't really want to spend that money.
He said they could keep car & if they got time would take steering wheel off & check further, maybe a loose contact/connection or something, but he didn't seem too keen.  He asked me if I was handy & could possibly have a go at doing it myself, lol.
I also asked him about how to get rid of the funky A/C smell.  He gave me some tips about where to put an Air fresh hanging thingy & no suggestion of buying anything from him.
No charge & sent me on my way.

Take the whole stalk off, disassemble and clean.

If it's functional and responds to a bit of a flick it's probably just gungey.

Thanks for the tip Rynex.  Would need someone else to do it for me tho.

We got to 300k a couple of days ago.  She was at almost 200k when I bought her in September 2012.

It's great to see that you have been driving it a lot. There are so many cars that are rarely driven...

Silly wiper/washer finally gave up today.  She was at mechanic for servicing & they called to let me know the wipers wouldn't stop.  I laughed & said yeah she does that sometimes.  When I get there to pick her up, he put the fuse back in so I could use my "special flick".  Nope they wouldn't stop.

So I guess I need the washer/wiper stalk.

It's been a while since I updated...................
Got a replacement wiper/washer stalk & had it replaced.  Yay, works properly now.
No problems in the last 12 months.
Getting ready for re-spray next month for our 10 year anniversary.
Purchased new seals, new door belt mouldings, S/S anniversary sill trims, reproduction mud flaps & Engine lid gas strut.  Have had a gen 3 lip sitting under the bed for about 4 years.
