I Know....another gearbox oil thread

Just going to change my gearbox oil and research is just confusing me on what oil to use.
I have a manual SW20 G Ltd... build date 04/1990  and I was leaning towards Amsoil 75-90.

GL4 75-90 seems to be the norm but in my owners manual ( UK ) it says to use API GL3 Multipurpose.
I'm wondering if thats whats used in the UK.

Then I came across this... even more confused.

"Toyota had factory fill ATF in the S54 from 01/90 to 04/90. These are the only S54s that can use ATF. DO NOT use gear oil in these early models unless you've completely disassembled the transmission and cleaned all of the parts.
Any S54 made after 05/90 used 75W-90 gear oil from the factory and should NEVER be filled with ATF."

Just used as a daily driver ..... not hammered, and gear changes are all still good. I just want to put fresh oil in her...hopefully the correct one.

    I have a 1990 model
And build date I think was 7/90
And I put in ATF nulon multi purpose 75-90
And that's fine after 2 months.

Kinda wish I'd gone and got redline mt90 just to see what the fuss is about

just to confuse you more, I use Nulon SAE 80 Smooth Shift in mine (early E153) and on the bottle it said it is good for transmissions where it's recommended to use ATF (for whatever reason). Shifts pretty good/smooth too.

FWIW,  for about the last 20k kms I've actually been using Amsoil Synthetic 75W90 GL4 (  MTG-01) with great results (S54 trans). Well worth the money IMO.

Those Owner's manuals were written over 20 years ago, and I believe API GL3 oil is now longer made anyway, but don't despair, just avoid anything with GL4/GL5, GL5, or GL6 on the container, and go for a GL4 even though you'll probably have to search for it.

Cheers Reddtarga for the info..you were actually the reason I leaned towards the Amsoil in the first place....after reading an old thread here.  Will probably go with the Amsoil.

The usual places don't sell it, but you can buy it online from the Dandenong distributors.

Just for reference in regards to redline products, if a gearbox is recommended to run an ATF fluid, the best option in their range is redline MTL.
