Cam timing?
Hey guys instead of rebuilding my tip end to accommodate for a set of 264 cams I figured I'd go the cheaper way as I'm on a budget and can't afford 1200$
So in my stock cam how far retarde or advanced should I go I've read on a stock cam don't go beyond 8 degs difference either side of stock I probably won't need different came gears will I? Or can't the stock ones be adjusted
Also I'm looking for a bit better low end/ mid range Unless someone can sway me for mid to top end.
How expensive is this aswell? Thought I'd ask here first
Just want to get a nice solid running car. Going on the dyno in a few weeks with an apexi safc if this helps Does a new fpr and bored rail. And standard bolt ons Intake exhaust etc Any help would be great Thanks :)

Hey bud, There;s not alot you can do with the stock cams. What Gen Engine are you running? If its a Gen III, then you can't do squat without aftermarket Cam Wheels. If your running a Gen II then it has 3 adjustments. See here for more info in regards to mucking about with cam timing on the stock engine: http://mr2oc.com/showthre...6&page=2&pp=20 Essentially, there are gains to be had on a Gen II, but nothing on a Gen III.

Probably not worth it. Check out: http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/index.php/toyota 'Modifying the 3sge engine' "With factory cams, small alterations to only the cam(valve) opening points by moving the cam wheel, seemsto have little nett benefit. Whilst some improvementsmay be made at one point, there is trade off in powerelsewhere, & quite often, also with emissions. Once thecam design is altered however, then the cam timingpoint needs to be optimized. The stock cam gears haveeither 3 or 6 holes to allow this, but it’s a terrible job todo this on the car & that’s where the need for a verniergear comes in. Unless you have modified cams, verniergears are mostly a gimmick. If you do buy them, onlybuy ones with hardened gears. Many well known Japbrands use unhardened gears and they don't last long."

Oh sorry guys Gen 2 Na
Yeah fair enough red targa I knew there was a trade off but I was just looking at getting a little better low - mid range or better top end
Has a pretty decent top end So I was leaning more towards a little punchier on the low to mid side

a turbo or V6 might help with that mid range punch ;) small NAs are usually only all about top end :P

If only I had my blacks :(
The engine is running great But if it ever needed to be replaced which I doubt as I drive it hard but I never hurt the engine.
If I didn't haver blacks I'd go a red top beams If I did Either turbo swap with the gearbox and LSD from a rev 5 Or a 1mzfe supercharged

Really not worth the effort playing with stock cams IMHO. From memory, you can get a small improvement by retarding the exhaust cam a bit, but it's not worth the time/effort. I know this may sound kinda silly, but if you haven't tried it yet, go fill up on some United 100 RON fuel. The ecu can handle this & there's a noticeable improvement in response. Even worked on my Honduh.

Thanks guys, for your help is it a job to mess around with it?
Fair enough And actually I just put 20$ in only because I was on empty and that was closest ahaha I thought it would be crap due to how cheap it is 1.61 is pretty cheap for 100 octane
Haven't really noticed anything yet maybe a little more responsive but I guess my ecu is still getting use to it as I e run 98 ultimate bp for about 6 months

Yes it's a job. To really do it right & verify the improvement, you need to throw it on the dyno, adjust it 2 degrees at a time (assuming adjustable cam gears) each way until you hit the sweet spot. Not fun adjusting the timing & not cheap spending that much time on the dyno either. I'd be surprised if you found 5rwkw.

Yeah.....I like it. I certainly notice a difference over BP in my car(s). Might not be exactly the same in the case of your car as it's an AUDM ECU setup for inferior Aussie fuel from 20yrs ago.
