I own an MR2, But needs some work.

Just bought an MR2 today $4000 1990 black, mags, speaker system, done 140thousand no wing.. (did they come with one original?), its been sitting still for some time, and in that time oil has leaked into the right spark plug tube, pretty sure it needs new rocker cover gasket, BUT correct me if i'm wrong or need replace other things. Car didn't start but starter motor was ticking fine..

So i'm going to buy new plugs for it. My father swears by NGK plugs and the ones that fit are, NGK BKR6EP-8. <let me know what ya rekon.
also...i bought a replica Border kit. $600 for the lot and honestly its a shabby job all fiberglass, i purchased it before i bough the car, don't know how well its going to turn out.

Let me know what ya think, if its a good buy, what i should look for or replace to be as safe as possible when it gets its road worthy.

    Sounds like a terrific bargain.

I think you've got the right idea when it comes to replacing the plugs. If oil's obviously been seeping through heavily into the cylinder itself you may need to clean it out. I'm not too informed when it comes to 3S motors however.

    Can we see some pictures?

yeh, your right about the rocker gasket. the standard phillips head bolts they use to clamp the rocker cover down are somewhat budget, and the washers with rubber backings that go along with them often need replacing also.

go to deltaV's website and get their little rocker cover bolt kit so you can do that at the same time.

so it's turbo yeh? bkr6e is the std copper, up to you if yoyu want to go platinum, of just change copper plugs every 5000k's with service.

BKR6E would be your copper alternative, cheaper but needs replacing more often.

EDIT sorry I'm multitasking and missed your comment above just_ace...

Hmm...sounds like me when I bought my car lol. Was cheap as well, but even cheap comes with a price.
I would just go copper for the sake of cheapness and replace once a year. At 4k it's probably an early model SW20 so platinums/iridiums are wasted if it. As you already know it needs some work so be prepared to fork out if it doesn't pass RWC. To pass RWC just focus on getting the safety stuff sorted out - tyres, brakes, lights, visible oil leaks etc.
Give it a good major service - belts, water pump, gaskets, fluids. If you do it once the first time, there should be plenty years of trouble free service :)
I'd consider selling the border kit if short on cash. Function come first!

Well my old 2nd gen 3SGE was BKR6EP-8, as listed on the engine lid cover.
But the Beams 3SGE is 1.1mm.

Yeh, just had a look then. Your right. Bit different, the gen 1 is 1.1 also, but gen 2/3 0.8mm.

Never had a gen2/3 na long enough to buy plugs for it.

Yeh that's weird the only reason I can think of is that gen 2/3 was a big change from gen 1 and gen 4 was a big change from gen 2/3.
Also since no one's mentioned, my incentive for copper is that apparently it provides better spark only downside is the frequency of replacement but we're all about performance here ;)

I went into Toyota spare parts asking for gasket kit....apparently they cant search there system by make and year. they need engine number and 27 other things before they go "Found it, you need one of these"

    Remeber 1990 MR2 N/A (i gotta get up on the 3S, gen2/3, 3SGE etc,)
So did a browse and found these 2.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/it...4703981#ht_1512wt_1397  (if it fits?)
Not sure i need all that or just...

N head over to delta v's site n buy the bolt kit.

For parts number searching this website will be your best friend
    http://www.toyodiy.com/
    1990 MR2 so you need GEN 2 (89-93, early 94 Aus models)
Unless you wanna take out the head gasket which is lots of work, valve cover gasket is fine. Can get from eBay or Road and Track which is a vendor here (check home page), they stock heaps of quality parts for our cars at competitive prices.

Yeah, Road and Track are good because you can phone them about getting the correct part, but also don't forget Lithia Toyota Parts in the US.
They also have great prices and service, but make sure you get the correct part number from Toyodiy before going to their website.

They won't have everything you may need because some of the US models are different, but you will find that they stock a surprising amount of stuff to fit our cars here in AUS.

There it is, the new car. :)
Roof is sunburnt will get it resprayed, body kit may be refitted with a border kit and slim line snorkels. (current standard kit is beat up in a few spots)
interior is in great shape, tho some of the lining is flapping around (will glue that back)
I think it was lowered he didn't say, but i want to raise it a bit, because it scrapes already (i don't know why people do that.)
And a wing i think i want a wing back on there. OEM or Rev-5 i dont know i will get a vote from my brother on that 1.
Quick question: whats the knob above the seat belt re-tractor. (it says pull)
