"Motors In Motion" Saturday 27 October 2012 - QLD President's Report
The second "Motors In Motion" at Kingaroy is over for another year and everyone who attended had a great time. I'd like to thank everyone who made the 3 hour trip, particularly Dennis The Menace, Scope and Falcon. Sadly Spyder had to pull out at the last minute due to the passing of a close family member in South Africa and our thoughts are with Spyder and his wife and family as they go through this difficult time.
Although the weather was somewhat warm (read "heatwave" here if you are a Tasmanian) there were a number of innovative solutions to finding shade (see the attached photos

), but the slight discomfort was more than made up for by some incredible displays by aerobatic aircraft, both real and model, plus the quality of all the other exhibits. MR2's were well represented amongst the hot rods, 1950's and 60's car and caravan combinations, steam driven machinery, farm tractors, bulldozers, feral mobiles, vintage and modern motorcycles, boats (yes, at Kingaroy airfield) and daily drivers.
The unique concept behind "Motors In Motion" is to bring anything that has a motor driving it, whether it is going or not. The show costs $5.00 to get in, there are numerous stalls selling "motor" stuff, and unlike some other shows that charge exorbitant entry fees this one tries to give as much value as possible and not just make money for the organisers. One of the ways that this is done is to run a motorkharna under CAMS rules with good prize money, with both Falcon and Spyder originally intending to compete.
On the day Falcon put up an incredible solo effort in completely stock SW20 (and with an old-age pensioner driving

) and was just beaten by an MX5 that was rally prepared and had been raced in the Targa Tasmania. Everyone who saw the runs commented on how well Falcon and the MR2 did, which was also a credit to the way Falcon keeps the car (see attached photo). No doubt the red SDub will be back again next year, with hopefully a Spyder and ADub for company.
Even though these shows don't appeal to everyone they do expose the car and its ownership to others, which was demonstrated by meeting Steve who lives in Kingaroy and had just purchased a late model yellow SW20. Steve added his car to the display, made contact with our two Technical Directors who dispelled some mechanical myths being told by locals, and now wants to join the Club. It shows that you can find MR2's everywhere, you just have to look.
All in all it was a top day and Falcon's efforts demonstrated to everyone that the MR2 remains a force to be reckoned with.
Our
next Run, the second last for the year, is on
Sunday the 18th of November when we'll be going south so keep this date free.
