3sge to 3sgte engine swap

Hey fellas

So recently, 1990 mr2 turbo's are now eligble for "mildy turbocharged cars" exemption offered to p platers

I currently have a 1990 G limited, and was wondering if a mod plate would be require for a swap to a gen 2 turbo?

I know that with silvias, you can swap a sr20 for a ca18det or sr20det without needing a mod tag because they were offered as a factory option "(for example the engine from a Silvia Q into a Silvia K etc etc)

Just wondering if anyone has gone down this road

cheers

    Ha ha, 'mildly turbocharged'...

    Slightly explosive?

What state are you talking about?

But yes, you'd definitely need a mod plate. Well in nsw anyway or you'd get a defect and your insurance would brush you.

I didnt realise you needed to get an Engineering Cert/Mod plate for 3sgte conversions. From the research i have done through the RTA i found that as long as the engine is of the same family(3sge,3sgte), is from the build date of the car onwards and is a factory option (as all sw20s are since you got the choice of either NA or Turbo for the vehicle). It doesnt require any engineering certs/mod plate and all that needs to be done is to notify the RTA of the engine No. change and notify your insurance company of the change.  Guess i was wrong....bummer.

Pretty sure as that turbo factory option was not an option here engineers
Cert is a definite. Mostly for brake capacity, and the rest for chain of ownership of engine.

I was under the same impression as Deco, cause thats what happens with silvias and the likes.

Might have to give Department of transport a call and find out

Correct - Different for other states.  Up here in the Northern Territory, I didn't have to have an engineering certificate or mod plate for my Gen 3 swap.  All MVR did is change over the engine numbers to match the vin number.
