Gen 2 vs Gen 3

Whats the difference between a gen 2 3SGTE and a gen 3 3SGTE? Is it external, internal or both? Also how do you tell the difference between the two?.. Mine has had engine swap, but im not sure which engine has been used.

If you could post a photo of the engine bay, we would be able to tell you immediately

There is an extensive build thread for my car here: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=18316

easiest way to tell if its a gen or gen 3 if its got the stock ecu is wethere or not its got an AFM or not
GEn 2 has AFM, GEN 3 has Speed density setup (no AFM)
Turbo is bigger and better on the gen 3, Gen has CT26 stamped on it, Gen 3 doesnt have anything afaik
Inlet manifold has a badge on it for the gen 2 , Gen 3 is just plain cast metal.
Gen 3 has a factory oil catch system, gen 2 doesnt have one..

these are the usual visual differences
    cheers

**** I keep hitting the thumbs down icon! Stupid iPhone.. How do you reverse that?

It has an aftermarket ecu, but I'm pretty certain it has CT26 stamped on it. Thanks.

hahaha you cant lol someone else has to bump it up for me..
yeah thats the reason i mentioned if its still got the stock ecu..
the manifold for the gen 2 has the badge saying
    2000 twin cam 16
    Ceramic power
    Twin entry Turbo

also the black box near the intake manifold on passenger side of the car will be missing ( gen 3 factory oil catch can)
    cheers

    oyurs is a gen2.

there was a thread that listed the differences.

if your talking just mechanically, technically everything is different tho some bits are interchangeable.

head doesn't have TVIS like gen2 and your old st162 celica.

TB is bigger, shim under buckets, better cams, differnet comp ratio, turbo, rods, oil pump, sump and cooler arrangement is different.

in stock format 240 vs 220 hp. but the gen3 is more responsive to light modding.

the gen3 ecu, fueling and turbo can handle up to about 17.5 psi without too much trouble, where as the gen2 can only really manage 14psi, and the turbo runs out of puff after 5500rpm.

Would it even be worth using interchangeable parts from a gen 3?

...As opposed to doing an engine conversion with a gen 3.

What's the name of that thread?

IMO its better to just go aftermarket.

Oil filter location is a easy thing to pick. Gen2 is near the turbo and Gen3 is off the front of the sump.

Gen two with ct20 and 17psi is a fast car. Just ask my mate in his bmw m3!
And if gen3 is quicker, than its QUICK 😄
