Spyder Soft top Replacement

Looked in the forum and can't see a similar thread, but I need to replace my soft top (been patched and has two very small tears).
I wanted to know what the experiences have been with replacement tops from the USA - there are a number on the web, eBay etc at between $ 475 - $699 (for the cover only with heated rear window in Glass), but I hear they are a bugger to fit (a 7 hour job), and some of the companies even supply videos on how to do it..... In chatting to my fellow MR2 boffins, I decided that I need to find someone with experience to fit the new one, do I go and purchace from USA or try Toyota locally?. I am waiting for a price from a local Toyota dealer, but they won't have in stock anyway.. Some people have told me they are difficult to fit, and in some instances they didn't actually fit properly anyway???

Please give me some guidance. Mine is a Tan colour anyway so not the standard Black, but that does not seem to be a problem.

Thanks
Dave

I've heard the same thing that they are hard to fit. here is a link to someone taking one off and looks a real b**@#$d soft top
i know a while ago road and track had complete soft tops for sale.
otherwise ring up company's who do upholstery there more likely to have experience as toyota most likely will charge you the earth.

Go see a local motor trimmer before you buy one. Ask them what they would  charge swap one over but will depend on how well its made. I would expect $300-$500 dollars
As usual its cheaper to buy overseas my supplies are
1240+gst for a vinyl one and  1500+gst for a cloth one

Thanks for the honest advice mate, can you tell me what the major difference is for usage and longevity between the Vinyl and or the cloth as I see both advertised and was not sure which would be the best suited. I guess by the price difference one would automatically think the Cloth was better, but why???

The cloth ones do tend to last a bit longer. The vinyl ones tend to harden up a bit over time and that leads to them cracking.
Ive fitted a few (not any MR2 yet) for customers that have brought them from ebay ect. Only drama ive had is when the wrong roof has been brought, as some cars look exactly the same but there is some big differences. As far as im aware the spyders are all the same. Ive also seen a big quality difference in the vinyl that is used, but I cant tell you who is good or not as I only buy the ones from my supplier so im covered if something goes wrong.

Plan to take mine out of the track car and fit it onto my street car, so I will get to find out . Would check with Terry  Road and Track he wont be cheap but nothing like what Toyota would hit you for one. Or try Abz done here at leppington I am sure he would have one lying around.
