Sw20 turbo engine knocking
Hey guys
In need of some serious help if you guys can help out Im new to this site and first Bought my mr2 bout 3 or 4 months ago I had no idea what was done to the car, Basically looked standard to me besides hks pfc with hand controller mix controller fuel defender and so forth, had a intake plenum leak which I fixed. Now on Thursday a friend borrowed it and drove to woop woop good couple of hours Friday morning going to work I heard a bit of a knock when I backed of the throttle only on 2400rpm, Checked the oil and filled up a little to much, drove home yesterday flushed out the whole engine changed sparks oil filter, and the small knock was still there last night took it to a dip wit mechanic which opened the rocket cover I noticed it had hks cams "well they were marked hks" now I had a small vac leak he changed the line and said cars fine u can drive it home at this time he drove it I Culd hear him fanging it, anyway I jumped in the car and from a small knock its turned to continues knock even from idle now I got no idea what it is, the car did loose a bit of power but still went fine till the "genius " decided it's okay now i can hear the turbo still boosting but the knocking is unbearable so if anyone knows what it is or can help me would be highly appreciated or if there's a actuall proper mechanic round melb Thanxxx

Does the knock match the engine revs? If it does it could be a big end on the way out, so best not drive it until you find what is causing it. For work on MR2's in Melb, many people on this forum recommend IDB in Richmond. Call 94285446 ask for Ian.

Pinging (detonation) and Bearing rattle/knocking are two different things, Just saying.... for mechanics in melbourne, depending on what part your from theres a few options but everyone seems to go to IDB or ANSON auto in richmond they are next door to each other.

are you sure its the bottom end? I'm always paranoid about strange noises from my engine but it always turns out to be nothing bad

Definitely pinging/detonation or just knocking? Have you ruled out things like engine mounts/suspension mounts etc if it happens with any of those things? Recommend IDB over Anson Auto.

MR2Slide, Hope you are able to get big end sorted and that there hasn't been damage caused to the crankshaft. BTW the correct term for pre-ignition is "Pinking" (not pinging). cheers Steve

A quality video of the rattle/knock with sound can speak 10,000 words.

Based on what you've said I reckon you've spun a big end bearing. I had the same thing happen to an MR2 I had years ago. Huge knocking sound while driving. Car still drove till it ripped up the crack bad enough that it just ceased. Best to tow it to a mechanic as every time you start it, would be doing more damage. Cost me 2k for a bottom end rebuild.

I spoke to Ian, and he said possibilities is bottom end but can't guess and actually have to open the block to see what's been done to it by previous owner weather it's worth fixing or replacement motor, so yesterday was first day started working on it, if i have a decent motor il probably rebuild it depending on the extent of damage,,,

Providing the crank can be ground down you would be better off rebuilding the bottom end, I have seen people throw used engines in with on ~ 80,000kms and last a few months, unless you have x-ray vision there is no guaranteed way of telling how good a second hand motor is. Atleast if you rebuild it you know the bottom end will never pop again, providing the machinist gets the clearances spot on.

Finally the engine is ripped apart and by looks so far definitely bottom end and engine has been opened up before most Likely by some one that loved blue silicon, but now the decision of standard build or forge and go all out?,
