Cruise Control Issues

hey all, Not sure if this is the place to keep asking these questions as they aren't exactly urgent as the title says but not sure where else to ask them.
anyways, got most of the important things fixed on the sdub now onto the smaller things that dont stop the car running but would be useful if they worked...
Main one is with the cruise control.. for some weird reason if i click the cruise control button to turn it on. on the dash the cruise light is on but the ABS light also comes on and im unable to use the cruise control.. so i click it on and off a few times until eventually the ABS doesn't come on but then if i go to set the speed the ABS light will come on and the cruise light goes off.. so i click it again a few times until finally i can use the cruise control fine but only for a varying time, seems to be different each time which then the cruise light starts to flash on and off and then i dont get it back. then say the next day ill have a fiddle with it again and itll repeat what i said above.. id imagine its some wiring fault but not being too familiar with cruise control systems and how they are related to the ABS im not sure where to start looking.
if anyone has any ideas thatd be great,

Regards,
Dylon

When the ABS light comes on - does it flash a light pattern? e.g. flash, off, flash, flash.  If it does the light pattern code will indicate the problem. If it comes on and stays on it indicates a malfunction in the ECU.

Not sure how it is linked to the Cruise, but might be via the speed sensors. Try the old trick of resetting your ECU by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

According to the service manual, with any cruise control problems probably the first thing to check is the stop light switch for resistance in the contacts, but as been mentioned also check the error code the cruise light flashes.

In your case I'm not sure why your ABS light would come on, but once I had a problem with my cruise control where it would sometimes not engage or drop out, and the green cruise light would flash 5 times.

After removing the stoplight switch I found it is a special dual pole unit that has 2 sets of terminals.
2 heavy ones to activate the stoplight, and 2 lightweight ones to control the cruise ECU.
Using a multimeter I discovered a very small resistance of about 4 ohms across the 2 lightweight terminals that turned out to be the problem.

The switch could not be taken apart for cleaning without destroying it, however I submerged it in WD40 and clicked it a few times then let it dry out. I then found the resistance to be zero.
After refitting it my cruise has been fine now  for several years.

    Hope that helps.
