It's high flowed, was all set for 205-10 at 16 psi, and the w2a was working well. The compressor surge was frustrating, and now the oil leak is too much to ignore. Just hoping Paul can patch me up for the event then I can think about something better for the future

Yes we both need a turbo upgrade!

Yes, you both could use a turbo upgrade. No need to silly, just sensibly sized. Bud, those numbers are about in line with a CT20B & near expectations of a K1/PE1919T. Although, I'd push them less given your preference is for track (richer AFR's & less ignition advance). I'd use a general rule of thumb, that a track tune should yield about 5-10% less peak power than a "street tune", given the frequency/length of WOT time.

Agreed. I can run more boost though I just get higher intake temps and no more power. We have both reached the limit of the turbo. I've built a strong engine and should be able to get good power with a turbo upgrade and still keep reliability. Mr plow should be in the same boat. The 5sgte does it a lot easier than the 2l. I make the same power with the 5sgte as I did with the 3sgte with 5psi more.

Sounds like the car will be drive able for MTC, not sure on all the gory details but sounds like Paul and Jeff have got things sorted. Will look forward to some tips on the eventual turbo upgrade soon

With a BOV change back to stock, an oil and filter change, and a bit less boost, my smoke issues were mostly eliminated for the MTC. Compressor surge was still there in the midrange at times, but still had a blast. Will be thinking turbo options- any suggestions on a suitable turbo for track usage in the 200-250 rwkw range?

Stuka was saying that a GT30/71 would do the trick and have great response. I'm considering this for my turbo upgrade. It's not all about dyno numbers. Sure you do want power though you also want it to be there when you need it. I only have 200kW in my car.

Garret are soon to release a gtx 2967 and 71 which uses a slightly smaller rear end than the gt30XX but a fair bit bigger than the GT28. It's the same as the current gt3071 WG. Jason's tas mr2 has the 3071wg and seems to be pretty responsive, in theory the 2971 should be more responsive than this as it's a billet compressor wheel. http://www.mr2australia.c..r2play/tm.aspx?m=108061

Can't find anything on the GTX29 series. Could use some comments on this new thread: turbo upgrade ideas?

I ran the GTX3071. Its too big for circuit work. Never on boost when it counts. Keep it as close to standard set up as possible or you will spend a lot of money and time and stress for little gain. Just replace the stock turbo with a 28/60 something, internal gate, sleeve bearing. Cheap ,simple, bolt on, very similar power with better torque. Do not buy a ball bearing turbo. If it get hot it will fail the bearing then dump the broken bits into your engine. Based on my last experience with 3SGTE turbo upgrades. You could always fit a supercharger. That would be pretty cool! If you want better times, spend the same amount of money on SPAX coilovers which would be custom rates for your car. Then drive training.

I agree with Jay on this one. 3071 was awesome on Pats Red SW20 and had torque everywhere (yes that was 2.2l and running a small rear housing), but even on 2litres with the baby rear housing in my opinion would be perfect not oversized. He was running out of puff up top. These new GTX29's sound interesting and could be the ideal setup. Every GT28 turbo on a MR2 over the years i have seen has been rubbish. For some reason they just never perform right.

Have settled on a Garrett GTX2860R with "stealth" adapter from ATS racing. Between the smaller 28 turbine housing and light weight billett smaller sized compressor wheel, it should spool up really quick, and pretty much just a bolt on to stock manifold. Supposedly the peak power "sweet spot" for this turbo is around 300hp (220 rwkw) though it's limit is still a bit higher. The guys are also relocating the W2A core over to the LHS, and putting in a decent oil cooler on the RHS. Mock up is below. Probably overall less volume of piping to charge, so the response once all done should be awesome. Now it's just the wait...
