V6 mr2 mechanic Melbourne
Good evening gentlemen ! I'm looking to do the v6 mr2 conversion. I've been collecting the necessary parts slowly: problem is I'm no good at assembling the beast .
Does anyone know any mechanics in Victoria who do the conversion? Whether they be reputable ones or backyard mechanics . If the price and time frame is right . I'm happy to pay !! Please let me know cheers guys

Should probably go to them and have a chat in person about what you want. Asking people on forums is the best way to start a swap in the wrong direction if the wrong person gives the wrong advice. I would suggest twobrutal as they have a much higher V6 mr2 population also the collective brains of Woodsport. Also IMOC forums are very useful, i have done alot of research on the V6 swap and i can tell you it is not a quick and easy conversion to undertake and i would budget at least $10,000 if your not doing the work yourself. John.

Whore of Babylon have done alot of research on the V6 swap and i can tell you it is not a quick and easy conversion to undertake John. I disagree with you on this point John. I think it's possible for two mechanically inclined people familiar with the SW20 to have the motor and gearbox sitting in the car over a weekend. Including removal of the 3S. The most difficult part in my mind is the wiring. Wiring in the ECU and splicing into the fuse box and body loom was by far the most time consuming part of my build. This and the fabricating of the exhaust could easily be outsourced. Crossing over the coolant pipes so that it flows in the correct direction can be fiddly also. If I were to do this again I'd investigate relocating the temperature sensor to the other side of the radiator as I'm led to believe this is a better solution. I've had the unfortunate experience of having an inexplicable problem that necessitated rebuilding the motor but this is uncommon. If it weren't for this and having to move house in the middle of the conversion it would of been very straightforward. I'm assuming this is a 1MZ/3VZ swap the OP is asking about and I'd encourage him to atleast attempt removing the 3S and mounting the gearbox and engine. Any problems he runs into during this part can easily be problem solved through the hive mind (forums) with a few good photos and asking the right questions. Prior to attempting my engine swap the biggest task I'd ever took on was basic suspension and chassis work and it taught me a lot. Not to mention the money you save on labor can be spent on collecting a decent tool set.

The actual mechanical work is quite straight forward as mentioned, so anyone could do that for the op (not everyone is confident/has the right tools/time or can be bothered doing it themselves) Wiring no matter what the conversion is always the hard bit. Definately agree about going into a workshop for a quote or idea on pricing. There is no set price for this type of work.

Thanks heaps for the wise words guys . Yeah I want to do the 3vzfe swap. Bought most of the parts under my bed . I'm no good with cars either . Just thought maybe you guys would know someone out there with a set price for a swap. Like how the Honda boys have people doing conversions for 500-1000 lol

A few questions. Aftermarket ECU or stock? Standard Camry exhaust Y-pipe or custom? Standard flywheel or aftermarket? E153 or S54 gearbox? Retaining aircon? Already got a Woodsport engine mount?

Yeah I'd definitely be putting aside $10,000 to have a professional do it for you. Remember that since you're going to be using the Camry ecu you will also need the immobiliser to go with it and that will all have to be incorporated into you loom and ignition. You're certain that you don't want to purchase a few tools and jump in. It could save you thousands of dollars.

10,000 saved up would definately make room for errors. sounds like its gonna be alot cheaper if i just bought one from interstate haha. I appreciate the advice though my man. i dont have much room at my house to do the conversion myself. Cheers !!!!!!

The thing is if you buy one from interstate it'll need to be a certified conversion as the car will have to be inspected when you bring it into Victoria. Even then you can run into problems.

Ask Chris (Bobinsky on here) who has a 2GR SW20 in Victoria who did his conversion and how much it cost. Headers and engine mount kit from USA is under $2000.
