^255 looks too wide/balloons on an 8.5" rim.

I've put 235 RS-Rs on a 9" Enkei Racing S and its perfectly flush with the edge of the rim.

bahahaha
So you're implying that extra 20mm makes a world of difference?

I've probably said this before...

People don't realise, wider does not automatically mean better (esp. in the wet). People who say wider tyres produce more grip "because there is more rubber on the road" are wrong. When you make a tyre wider, you alter the contact patch to be wider , but it reduces in length. So depending on sidewall stiffness, a wider tyre can actually give less rubber on the road. It depends on the car, the situation, the conditions.
N.B.
1)  Wider tyres are more prone to aquaplaning.
2)  Wider tyres are more sensitive to camber control.  (and we all know SW20 Macpherson strut sussy isn't great at that)
3)  Wider tyres on the same rims might not perform as expected, as rim width relative to tread width can have a significant effect.
4)  It is virtually impossible to get a result with all other things being equal as there are a lot of variables.

considering 3rd gear in the dry full throttle spins the wheels as it comes onto boost, i dont really want to try a thinner tyre.

Looks good Surok

What offset are your rims front and rear and also what size tyres are you running on the front.

I am looking at upsizing my track rims and tyres and not sure what size to go for. I don't want to modify my guards if possible.

I was thinking 255 on the rear and 235 on front but not sure what fits (7.5 and 8.5 or 8 and 9 rims) no coilovers yet

Surok has recently sold this car. In case he doesn't see your post the specs on the wheels/tyres are as follows:
Front - 18 x 7.5 +30 with a 215/35/18
Rear - 18 x 8.5 +40 with a 255/35/18

The rear lip needed to rolled to take the 255. The front fitted fine and was flush with the guard.
The rear tyre buldged a little on the 8.5 but provided plenty of grip.

Hope that helps?
