Friends ute not shifting into all gears

Not sure if this should be in the urgent section or not. But since it isn't a Toyota I will post it here.

He has a Mazda b2200 and all of a sudden today it won't shift into gear when the car is ON.
If the car is off it will go through all the gears fine but as soon as it starts up it just wont go into gear. He has to push it really hard to get into gear and it makes a bit of a clank noise when it does(maybe just from pushing so hard). Not a grind.
Once it is moving it is better at shifting up but downshifting is still very difficult.

Any ideas? I'm sure there could be multiple reasons why

    Sounds like your clutch is gone. The symptoms you describe are very similar to mine when my clutch disc was verges from disintegrating.

    Yeah that's what I thought and told him but I've never had a clutch go bad on me before and I figure it would be more gradual not just all of a sudden. He is looking for a new car now anyways. He bought the car for 600 and doesn't wanna put too much money into it so it will probably just end up at the wreckers
