Strange seatbelts

Hey all
My mechanic has told me that my seat belts do not lock when pulled on them (hence not ADR) HOWEVER he has taken them out of the car and placed them on the bench and they work perfectly and also when the car shakes/moves the belts lock also.
Has anyone else encountered this?  What this the work around for this?  Another pair of belts are going to cost over $700 from Toyota (which they say no refunds).  I don't want to fork out the money if all they're going to do is the same thing, nor do I want to buy second hand ones if they turn out the same.

Any suggestions?

You can get ADR approved aftermarket ones for the SW20 MR2. I recall reading on the forum that people had bought and installed them.

For some reason the doors have to be closed for the seat belts to lock up (I think). That could be what your mechanic was missing, as my old mechanic was confused by that initially.

There is an extensive build thread for my car here: http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=18316

Is the vehicle a JDM import?
robk - I thought the doors have to be closed for them to lock, but later realised it was just the retracting mechanism that was affected by the door levers. i.e when you open the door they retract back.
They wont be the same if you get them out of an Aust. delivered MR2 -  I got an Aussie pair for the price of a few beers from a fellow forum member... :)

You can always get them from Japan ( Aussie specific ) if you have a contact there. They are about $250 for the pair.

    Yeah it's an import.
From what we can see, the seat belts are movement shock activated not inertia / quick acceleration of the belt itself.
Does this pass ADR or not?  Prob not actually.  This should have been picked up when the car was originally complied i'm guessing.
Will I have to change for the Aust. delivered belts?

No it wont pass ADR - I had a Regency roadworthy done and the dude sat in my car and yanked the belts and they didn't lock like Aussie cars do, hence defected.
Sounds like a half-arse compliance like mine.
Just find someone wrecking an Aust. MR2 and grab the belts.

Ah crap!  I thought that might have been the case.  Bloody hell :l
Looks like more time in the shop :(  It's been in the shop and in the garage longer than it has been on the road haha.
    Oh well.

Its actually pretty easy to swap the belts over, I can do both sides in about half an hour. :)

I've spent a lot of time with my seat belts. ADM do not have anything to do with the doors, and they lock up when the mechanism is tilted on its side or when its unspooled too fast. Removing the entire unit is easy. Pop off the cover, 2 bolts at the mechanism, one at the shoulder and one at the floor.

I ASSUME the aussie belts would bolt in place on a JDM car, probably your best bet. Make sure the edges aren't frayed obviously (for safety and a defect). If they don't retract well, you can pretension the springs to improve them a fair bit.

    !Remember!

If you are going to get adm belts make sure you get adm buckles as well!!

    Jdm/adm have different tongue sizes.
