First MR2 - 1992 NA sw20

Hey Folks,
Always wanted an MR2 and finally got what I wanted.
It's a 1992 white MR2 SW20 N/A 5 speed manual targa top. (Don't know too much about specifics yet)
I paid 6.3k, with 11 months rego, and condition of sale to have air con gassed and new clutch installed.
Engine apparently has 71,000km (Not sure how genuine though)
Body is fairly straight with a few trolley dints and stone chips.. can't complain!
All electrics are working so far.. Only problem I have found so far is the check engine electrics light comes on when the car is cold / wet and goes back off after about an hour?

Drove it down to Wilsons Prom on the weekend and she went fine the whole way.
Here's a pic.. will add some more soon :)

Welcome! The more white SW's the better.

Reading your post and seeing your pictures and I get nostalgic for when I first got mine. They were an exciting few months.

As for your electrical problem my only suggestion is to check if water is pooling on top of your sparkplugs, does it ever run rough when that light is on?

Doesn't seem to run rough or have any pooling around spark plugs when the light is on..
I've a mate whose an auto elec, going to get him to plug it in and find the error code hopefully.

    Hi rdenton,

I think you bought the car I *ran* from!
    http://www.mr2australia.c./mr2play/fb.ashx?m=72664

did it have no service history? did it look water damaged?
did the salesman insist that it would increase in value or that it was a "chick magnet"? :P

I wasn't ready to gamble on a car like that. If it is the same car (missing wiper, other wiper rusted to all hell), let me know how it goes, if you have any problems etc, and best of luck with it! It looked way too suss for me, but I really do hope there are no problems with it and that you look after it!
    Just watch for that rust...

    Hey mate,
That's the one indeed. Thanks for pointing some stuff out. The sales guy was a massive dick and I ended up dealing with his manager.
So far, mechanically the car is sound. The engine is driving very smoothly and I've had no problems there. The windows leak some drops in heavy rain and I'd agree that there has been water in there at some stage (They put new carpet down to hide that), however my brother is a panel beater and his opinion was that it's not quite out of control yet.

It's definitely suspicious having no service history and only 71,000km on the clock but I test drove it for about 30 minutes before deciding to buy it. They had it listed at 6k on carsales and told me it was going up to 7k tomorrow. The clutch was slipping on test drive and I told them I couldn't pay 6k for it with a clutch slipping so badly. This is where the sales dude got real ****ty and tried to tell me the clutch was fine. I was walking out there door when the owner took over. We ended up bickering for a while and came to agree that if they replaced the clutch, regassed the aircon, did the rear main seal, fixed the wipers, taillight, i'd pay 6.3k (drive away no more to pay) - not too sure how hard a clutch job is on an mr2 but im guessing it would've cost me 700+ to do it myself..

If I find any major faults with it before the RWC expires I'll report it to the VACC. I'm 75% sure the RWC was dodgy. The night I drove it home a tail-light was out and the headlight wasn't working until i gave it a knock.

At the end of the day, 71k on the clock, genuine or not, it's driving very smoothly. The rust situation isn't too bad and I've had worse, and luckily for me my brothers an expert at dealing with it. I wouldn't have bought it without his ok.

Never trust a used car dealer! the dealer who sold me mine told me the seat was wet because the idiot yard hand started washing the car with the window down. What a douche! I reported them to the Vacc after my mechanic found a couple of cracked engine mounts. Any way result is he's long gone now. Ant the car turned out to be awesome once I'd fixed a few things. Best of luck with yours. It looks fair in the photos. Their a fun car!

Thanks for the words guys. YEah stuff used car dealers, con artists.
Looking at replacing the stereo soon, can anyone give me a heads up on this?
If I remove the stock double din cassette tape will I be able to use the brackets on a standard head unit?
I was thinking of just putting a plastic sleave below. Also, I've heard the front door speakers are 5.25" with a 1" tweeter.
Has anyone tried the apline spr-50c?

WHATEVER YOU DO dont loose the stereo bracket
yes the bracket will fit a single din unit, you can use the plastic din tray to cover up the gap or go for a double din unit.
speakers are a weird size but you can still fit 6.5inch speakers from memory, thats what i have i think cant remeber now. you need to use spacers for them to fit and need to trim the door trim to fit them
if i was to do it again i would try and keep the door trim intact and fit the stock sized speakers
    tweeters are in the doors.
dont bother replacign the speakers in the back they are not going to make much difference.
as for addign a sub do a search there a few different ways to do it
    cheers

You can run 6.5" splits up front behind the original covers. I ran some high end infinity splits in mine. I deleted the rears and had a custom ported 12" sub behind the passenger seat. It blew me away how good it sounded.

For anyone interested, I ended up putting 6.5" woofers and new 1" tweets in. Just through a new alpine head unit with no amp, and disconnected the rear speakers. Pretty ballsy little setup for $300. I managed to not break any clips also :)

Car has been going good, found a small leak in sump gasket but will sort that out this week.
