200,000km T-Belt service

Hello, I'm new to here and I just got my first stock 92' NA SW20!

It is a sweet car and I'm loving it a lot! But it's due to its 200k T-Belt service,
may I seek for your advice where would be good for a T Belt service in Sydney area,
much appreciated!!

I have quoted at my nearby mechanic and they said >$1000... I am just wondering
would it be too expensive... thanks a lot for your advices! Cheers.

most dealers will say its an engine out, and a major change
Mine was done at 100,000kms by a car dealer around $700. this was over 10yrs ago though.

I have Toyota at camden do all services on my cars.

They do great work for the right price. They have done the 100,000 and 200,000 timing belt changes on my n/a.

I think it was around the $400 mark each time, with a service.

Thanks for your suggestions darius and Dudeman! Will get a quote from those two choices.

But Dudeman I can't believe Toyota offered such a good price for the T Belt service for about $400 ~? I supposed companies charge much more than mechanics.

$400 for a timing belt seems cheap, it's somewhat common practice to also change the water pump at the same time, this will/may be the price difference?

I have a rather different experience with my NA and t.b. change.. and was after similar help  a while back so i thought i'd share my 2 cents.

I called sydney city toyota (where car is normally serviced) - they quoted me 1.1k over the phone, so a month later i try to make a booking, they said they would have to get back to me regarding a 'proper' quote, hear back from them that afternoon, quoted me in excess of $2000, so that was a definite no.

paul brell quoted me 1.6k roughly
rev doctor quoted me around 1.5 or something liek that - but they didnt have the time to do it at that stage..

ended up going to a place near my home recommended by Dylan, paid around the 1.5k mark, felt great afterwards.

I think these woudl be more realistic figures for you to be looking at (of course other parts would also have to be changed, ie. water pump as just_ace mentioned)

The engine does not have to come out to do a timing belt.
Be sure to get new rollers, cam seals, tensioner, and water pump at the same time.

Even 1k sounds VERY excessive for a TB change...most mech will bend you over at the sight of an MR2
Also, sourcing the parts yourself eg. US/eBay etc., will make a huge difference in the cost as I suspect most places will get parts from Toyota AU.

Thanks for all your comments and advice! and vicsticks for your experience, >$2000 for Toyota seems to be a more realistic figure! (and not necessarily better in my experience~)

I just got a quote from the Al Palmer for $800 T Belt only, and $1500-$2000 together with pulleys, tensioner, water pump, oil seals, coolant, (engine belts and hoses~?). It seems fair for me, but yea MRTurbo reminded me I could source the parts myself as I am heading back Hong Kong for a month and wish I can have a fruitful parts hunting! : )

I just spoke to Toyota at Camden.
There is a listing price for it to be installed at $530, but the manager there thinks that it may take some extra time and may cost around $700 installed.
I'm positive it was less than both those figures when i had my 100k and 200k done, but still at those prices not too bad for a dealer.
Gee, some of those bigger prices - does it come with KY and a cuddle??

dudeman,. can you get a list of what that does and doesn't include? there's no way a water pump, tension bearings etc wuld be inculded at that price.

pump's are $110-200 (depedning on the parts sales rep)
    bearings are $50+ each
    tensioner $60-100
cam seals another $15 each etc
    timing belt $60-80

add the rest of the servicing prices like oil, coolant filters etc and labour.
