Dead starter?
Hi guys, did some searching and found this: http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=77294&highlight=dead+starter+motor Basically, car has been running good, no issues at all. Cold weather has set in i guess. First time i try to start it will crank for about 2 seconds and then halt, like it hit a wall or cant move or something. Then when i turn the key to start it again, i hear the loud clunk of the starter solenoid engaging but no turn over at all.Changed the battery to my other cars one (550cca, no issues at all) and same dead. Changed to my sisters cars battery, same deal. Checked all the grounds and the power line to the battery, no problems, nothing strange, all solid. In the above thread it suggest the starter contacts? Anywhere i can get more info on this? Never played around with starters but surely they arnt that complicated!

seems to me like the contacts are stuffed, anyone know where i can buy a rebuild kit from? contacts + plunger or something similar?

I can't see the other thread but starter contacts are usually large bits of copper well fastened to the starter motor. Check that one has not come loose, though if it starts to turn, that may not be the problem. If the solenoid is engaging and the motor is starting, an obstruction is possible. Try loosening the spark plugs (OK it's not going to start) but if it then turns over, perhaps there is liquid in the combustion chamber. If it doesn't improve, it could be the starter motor/solenoid. I have seen mechs perform percussive maintenance on the starter with a long bar, enough to get it back to the shop. http://manual.teq.org/ for the BGB

It will turn over for a couple of seconds, then freeze. Then it will not turn over anymore. If try say, a couple of minutes later, then it will repeat the same thing. Definitely no obstruction, thats way too hardcore lol. My money is on the contacts. If theyre way too worn, then it wont give good conduction of current flow to the motor itself (when the plunger engages). Obstruction is a bit over the top atm, there is no evidence that the engine is physically being prevented from turning. Thanks for the help tho!

OK, so it could be a short in the in the armature windings (unlikely as they are large) or some bu**erage in the contacts/bearing department. It'll be a couple of bolts and two screw connectors to get out, but disconnect the battery first!

yup thanks man, thats the plan. Ill take it out and check the plunger and contacts. if i end up needing another one does anyone know what cars share the same starter/what i can swap it with? 5sfe camrys/celicas?

might actually have one, recon, about 4mths b4 the old motor went toes up. Have to check if the new one has a starter on it.

well took it off and opened up the plunger side. Contacts are barely even worn but the plunger was pretty worn. Sanded them all nice and flat and put it all back together. Improved the ground and main connection.
No change, exactly the same problem. Ill try another battery again (incase the one in there is stuffed) and if that fails ill try and find another starter.
Does anyone know what cars share the same starter???

pulled the starter from a 2ltr camry, cause it looked identical. Tried to install it and it hits one of the coolant lines and is like 1mm away from the bolt holes to line up. LOL. So then i decided to pull the motor from the housing and see if i can swap them over, but no, the they have different sized drive gears.....................FFS why so stupid?
Time for some angle grinder action

im seriously stuck now, i have no idea what the problem could be except possibly the starter relay.
Put on the newer starter motor (possibly fuked as well? appears to work fine off the car). Hooked it all up, and it does EXACTLY the same thing. The engine WILL NOT turn, i clearly hear the relay click and the solenoid hit and nothing happens. Im lost. The car was running fine prior to this,

just checked the starter relay and its fine. This makes no sense, unless the engine is seized which also makes no sense cause it was working perfectly fine, it even started at one point when i first had the issue.

If it checked ok out of the car well probably
With regards to the relay one of the wires has a fusible link close to the relay , you cant see it as its covered by loom tubing , could be its blown

yeh i checked that, only reason i havent looked into fuses is because when it started happening it was kinda intermittent. It would actually start cranking at the start, but really slow, then it would start doing this.
Ill try another battery from another car again. It looks like a dead battery basically, but ive tried a few already lol
